Loved ones devastated after filming in West Phoenix

Phoenix Police detectives believe the shooting began after men met in the parking lot of a store on 43rd Avenue and Bethany Home Road to conduct a transaction arranged through social media. Three people were killed in the shooting. Justin Lum from FOX 10 reports.

Police said the shooting occurred shortly after midnight on August 20 at the southeast corner of 43rd Avenue and Bethany Home Road. The officers were called in for a shooting operation in the area shortly after midnight, and when they arrived they found three people with gunshot wounds.

Investigators said the three were taken to a nearby hospital, where two of them were later pronounced dead. The third person identified as a teenage male is in critical condition and is expected to survive.

Investigators later learned that two other adult men had taken themselves to another hospital. One of the two was later pronounced dead while the other, who was arrested by police, was not injured.

In the afternoon of August 20, the police identified the three dead. They were identified as 19 year old Victor Manuel Cruz, 19 year old very young and 16 year old Salvador Gomez Medina.

“Detectives believe the men met in the parking lot of a store on 43rd Avenue and Bethany Home Road to conduct a transaction arranged through social media,” police said Friday.

At some point the meeting escalated into an exchange of fire and at least 20 shots were fired.

“What I can say is that we don’t believe there is anyone else involved in the incident that we haven’t considered, so there is no known public safety threat,” said Sgt. Andy Williams said.

The shooting devastated loved ones

Genevieve Vasquez, a Gomez Medina family member, recalls his life.

“All I have to say is that he was a good boy and I hardly get into their family and I have a strong bond with him. It really hurts me,” said Vasquez.

Vasquez said she knew Cruz too.

“He was a good boy too,” said Vasquez. “He works, supports his mother as best he can, his siblings, so we don’t know how to react because everyone we knew was in this car.”

Police are investigating a shootout in west Phoenix that left three men dead and another seriously injured.
