Phoenix Council approves controversial Warehouse District tower

PHOENIX – Phoenix City Council unanimously voted for changes that will give way to a mixed-use skyscraper called The Blue – but the project won’t move forward for at least a year. The project sparked controversy between those who wanted to keep the building’s historic preservation intact and those who see the new development as a way to advance the mission of one of the project’s stakeholders – the Arizona OIC, which stands for Opportunities Industrialization Center. The council decided to remove the listed overlay of the existing building with effect from February 4, 2022 in order to prevent the project from circumventing the one-year demolition ban that normally applies to listed buildings planned to build within the existing building and remove a wall and roof.
