Here’s a quick look at metro Phoenix art news, from artists receiving prestigious awards to events returning after a pandemic hiatus. From fashion to poetry, everything is there. New FilmBar Partnership FilmBar is partnering with The Nile Theater in Mesa to host Film Bazaar, a monthly record / film swap and a screening. The first screening on September 26th will be The Toxic Avenger. It happens from noon to 5pm at The Nile Theater. Saguaro Man 2021 AZ Burners, a nationwide Burning Man community, recently announced that it would hold its Saguaro Man 2021 event near Willcox from October 13th to October 17th. Organizers plan to incorporate COVID-19 containment strategies including tests and masks. Mayor’s Arts Awards The Mayor’s Arts Awards, an event sponsored by the Mayor’s Office and the Phoenix Center for the Arts, will be held at Margaret T. Hance Park on November 18. Arizona State University Poet Wins Pulitzer Prize Poet Natalie Diaz received the 2021 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for her second volume of poetry, Postcolonial Love Poem. In 2018 she was appointed a Guggenheim Fellow. Diaz holds the Chair of Modern and Contemporary Poetry at ASU and is the founding director of the Center for Imagination in the Borderlands. New Tempe Leadership Brendan Ross is the new assistant community minister for the arts and culture for the city of Tempe. The position was previously held by Ralph Remington, who is now director of culture for the San Francisco Arts Commission. click to enlarge Aimee Ollinger talks to studio visitors about her work. Lynn Trimble Art for Good Scholarships The Carmody Foundation has announced the names of several artists who will receive their latest round of Art for Good Scholarships. They are Vernon Begaye, Tal Dvir, Janel Garza, Tiesha Harrison, David Knorr, Aimee Ollinger, Ellen Nemetz, Lucretia Torva, Michael Viglietta and Claire A. Warden. Each will receive $ 1,000 and their work will be on display at the Sisao Gallery in November. Mucho Mas Art Studio to be closed The Mucho Mas creative space, founded in 2017 by artists Kathy Cano-Murillo and Emily Costello, has been closed, but Costello continues to use the space as an art studio. She hopes to have an exhibition of new work in the room at 1736 East McDowell Road in the coming months. Water Bottle Art Lauren Lee, whose studio is located in the new Rocking S Art Ranch creative hub in Phoenix, is one of several artists whose artwork can be seen on labels for Pepsi’s water bottle brand LIFEWTR. Lee’s design shows a pair of saguaro cacti in the middle of a colorful desert sunset. The company plans to announce the creation of a mural this month. Sama Alshaibi is one of two Arizona photographers to be named Guggenheim Fellows 2021. Sama Alshaibi is Professor of Photography and Video at the University of Arizona at Tucson. House Reopening The Walter Productions team is reopening its Where? House event space in October after a prolonged pandemic hiatus. The first event will take place on October 1st, further events will be announced in the coming weeks. Tempe ArtSpace Though Tempe City Council authorized the city to negotiate with Minnesota-based developer Artspace to create affordable work and living space for artists, the project may have failed due to news that Artspace has not received a tax credit on low-income Arizona residential real estate , discontinued or postponed year. Fashion moves downtown ASU’s fashion program has moved from the Tempe campus to the downtown Phoenix campus. The program is led by Dennita Sewell, who previously worked as a curator for fashion design at the Phoenix Art Museum. Miami Loco Returns The Miami Loco Arts Festival in Miami, Arizona, is slated to take place April 22-24 next year after a pandemic break. The event is organized by Michael and Johanna 23, whose creative space Firehouse on Roosevelt Row was closed in 2016.
