The Burton Barr Central Library recently received the American Institute of Architects’ Twenty-Five Year Award 2021, recognizing the building designed by Will Bruder Architects and DWL Architects in 1995 for its way of reflecting the desert landscape and incorporating sustainability. The organization also recognized the Gould Evans-designed Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community Justice Center in Scottsdale and the Ayers Saint Gross-designed ASU Hayden Library in Tempe with awards for 2021. EXPAND The city is seeking input on a timetable for this civil rights monument to update. Lynn Trimble Civil Rights Memorial – The City of Phoenix is seeking input on the final timeline of the Civil Rights Memorial in Eastlake Park on 16th and Jefferson Streets, which will cover the period 2000-2020. The memorial, completed in 1997, highlights key historical figures and events that have influenced the civil rights movement over the past 100 years. Community members can submit suggestions online or via email until May 31, or attend a virtual task force meeting on Tuesday, May 25 at 5:00 PM. EXPAND changes are planned for the American Legion Post 1 location near Grand Avenue. Changes to Lynn Trimble Grand Avenue could move to a Phoenix property at 723 West Polk, which is near a section of Grand Avenue known for the arts and heritage preservation. The city is in negotiations with a developer who plans to buy the property and then build new homes (with a preference for veterans) while retaining some elements of the existing American Legion post. The city is currently holding presentations at various meetings and several small business owners and creatives from Grand Avenue are hoping to meet with the developer and the city to provide additional input on the changes to the site and how they may affect the area. Julio César Morales is a guest judge for an upcoming contemporary art publication. Julio César Morales Guest Judge Tempe-based curator Julio César Morales will be the guest judge for the next edition of Southwest Contemporary, a New Mexico-based art publication currently looking for submissions from artists who would like their work to be considered for Volume 3: Inhale. Exhale, which will be released in August 2021. Morales is the curator of the ASU Art Museum in Tempe and an artist who frequently deals with migration issues in his work. Phoenix choreographer Nicole Olson received a research and development grant. Scottsdale Public Art Research Grants The Arizona Commission on the Arts recently awarded research and development grants to 24 Arizona-based artists who work in a variety of fields including dance, film, puppetry, visual arts, and more. Recipients working at Metro Phoenix include Dexter L. Booth, Stacey Gordon, Ryan Greene, Dominique Holley, Mary Lucking, MEGHANDIEGO, Karen Odden, Nicole L. Olson, Deswood Tillman, and Kristian Williams. The deadline for the next round of applications for research and development grants is July 1st. EXPAND There is a box near the gallery entrance where you can donate items to a new public art project. Lynn Trimble Art of Recycling: Artist Kris Manzanares is using discarded clothing to create a new work of temporary public art that will be installed at Tempe Town Lake this fall. Community members can participate by contributing unwanted green clothing or textiles that Tempe Public Art collects in bins at the Tempe Public Library and the Tempe Center for the Arts (near the gallery). Piper Charitable Trust has submitted applications for its next class of Piper Fellows who will participate in a leadership development program focused on the nonprofit sector, including arts and culture, education, health, human services and Religion. Current fellows are Tiffany Fairall, chief curator of the Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum. Applications are possible on September 1st. EXPAND Alonzo King LINES Ballet is part of the 2021/22 season at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts 2021/22 Performing Arts SeasonsMultiple performing arts centers recently announced their 2021-22 Seasons, which will include concerts, dance, films, theater, speakers, and more. Chandler Center for the Art offerings include La Santa Cecilia, Mostly Kosher, and Boz Scaggs. Mesa Arts Center highlights include Alton Brown, Kristin Chenoweth, David Foster, Neil Gaiman, John Leguizamo, and Wynton Marsalis. The cast of the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts includes Alonzo King LINES Ballet, Fran Lebowitz, Keb ‘Mo’ and Lea Salonga. NEA Fellow Ballet Arizona performing at the Desert Botanical Garden. Rosalie O’Connor NEA Scholarships The National Endowment for the Arts recently awarded more than $ 1.5 million in total to 20 arts organizations in Arizona, including the Arizona Commission on the Arts, which received $ 942,732. Other grant recipients include Arizona Opera ($ 23,500), Arizona Theater Company ($ 10,000), Ballet Arizona ($ 25,000), City of Mesa on behalf of the Mesa Arts Center ($ 25,000), Cultural Coalition ($ 15,000), Scottsdale Cultural Council ( $ 35,000) and West Valley Arts Council ($ 20,000). ASU received a $ 100,000 grant and a $ 40,000 grant on behalf of ASU Gammage. EXPAND Grand Avenue is known for this fancy street art in front of Bragg’s Pie Factory. Jacob Tyler Dunn Grand Avenue Events Preliminary plans for two fall events on Grand Avenue, including a Creative Center Activation event on Friday and Saturday November 5th and 6th, and a Dia de los Muertos celebration on Sunday October 31st The organizers are currently meeting with local business owners and community members for their input and ideas. Lynn Trimble New Exhibits Hannah Makkonen’s captivating Materia Prima exhibition of sculptural works examining symbiotic relationships with a speculative lens of the future continues at the ASU Step Gallery in Grant Street Studios through Saturday, May 15. Vision Gallery and The Gallery at the Chandler Center for the Arts are showing paintings, prints and photographs inspired by outdoor experiences back at The Lost Leaf in a new exhibition entitled “Take a Hike” from May 15 to August 14 . Lynn Trimble Call for Art Nicknamed NXOEED, artist James B. Hunt is working with several creative minds to organize a sticker drop for October on the Phoenix Subway. They have an open call for sticker designs by local artists who can connect with the organizers through Facebook.
