PHOENIX (3TV / CBS 5) – The Banner Poison & Drug Information Center in Phoenix is warning patients not to use ivermectin to prevent or treat COVID-19. Ivermectin is “a prescribed anti-parasitic drug typically given to animals.” “Higher doses can cause significant disease in humans,” says Dr. Daniel Brooks, medical director of the Banner Poison & Drug Information Center. “Ivermectin is not approved for the treatment of COVID-19 disease and should not be taken. Animal formulations are not for human use. ”So far, the Banner Poison & Drug Information Center in Phoenix had two cases in August of a patient using ivermectin who had side effects. One of them had to be hospitalized. The center also had 12 calls involving someone exposed to ivermectin since early 2021. Four other calls were from people inquiring about uses for the drug, according to a press release from the Banner Poison & Drug Information Center in Phoenix, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not use ivermectin for the treatment or prevention of COVID-19 approved in humans and the drug is not an antiviral drug. “There are legal uses for ivermectin in both humans and animals. Patients should be advised not to take any medication used to treat animals and should be instructed to use ivermectin only as directed by a doctor,” the state health department warning said Mississippi. “Veterinary medicines are highly concentrated for large animals and can be highly toxic to humans.
