Connie Haines, 89, died peacefully in his sleep on October 31, 2021 in the care of the Hospice of the Valley Arizona. She was born on December 31, 1931 in Shiprock, New Mexico, to Alice Nelson. They moved to Globe, Arizona, where Connie graduated from Globe High School in 1949. She then enrolled at Arizona State Teacher’s College in Flagstaff. There she met Lamar Haines. They were married on May 19, 1950. Connie taught young children in Flagstaff for more than 30 years, introducing them to the joys of learning language, reading, math, and social skills. When she wasn’t teaching, she devoted her energies to the Flagstaff Federated Church’s Methodist Youth Fellowship, helping countless teenagers navigate their way through youth. She also supported Lamar’s outdoor educational work at Camp Colton, near Hart Prairie. The Haines house on Beaver Street was open to anyone in need of a meal or shelter. Grandchildren, nieces, nephews, high school and college students, and travelers all found a generous, loving, and disciplined environment. Many stayed a few months; some stayed for a few years. Connie retired from teaching and moved to Phoenix. There she dedicated herself to the Mission Bell Methodist Church, supported and worked at the blackboard, a personal passion. Connie leaves behind her daughter Vicky (Mark) Foster, son Lee (Val) Walsh-Haines, daughter Becky (Reba), grandchildren Tory Foster, Jenna (Josh) Rosenberg, Nathan (Lindsey Burke) Walsh-Haines and Grant Walsh-Haines and great-grandchildren Ari and Abigail Foster and Ellis Rosenberg. Her grandfather Edmund (Poppa) Wallace, mother Alice Nelson Linn, and husband Lamar Haines preceded in death. Funeral arrangements are made through Abel Funeral Services, 1627 North 51st Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85035 (abelfuneralservices.com). A private family service is planned. Please send your condolences to PO Box 42016, Phoenix, AZ, 85080. Please direct memorial donations to Friends of Camp Colton, PO Box 393, Flagstaff, AZ 86002 (friendsofcampcolton.org) or St. Mary’s Food Bank, 3131 West Thomas Road , Phoenix, AZ 85017 (firstfoodbank.org).
