The first Leicester Restaurant Week runs Monday 18th – Saturday 24th October and one of the 30+ participating venues is Leicester’s independent Phoenix Cinema and Arts Center. We were invited to try the Leicester Restaurant Week offering, which takes place every day of the week in the popular on-site café-bar. The Phoenix offer includes any meal from the special menu with a glass of wine or bottled beer for £ 14. With many of the main meals costing £ 12, this means you can get a great deal on your drink for just £ 2 (around half the price of a bottle of Peroni or a glass of wine). The menu is full of classic favorites alongside some of the chef’s other specialty dishes. The fish and chips here is clearly a favorite with the team bringing out one at a time (it looked fabulous) but we thought we’d do something different. Other menu options included Confit Duck with Dauphinois Potato, Rainbow Vegetable Stew, Chicken Risotto, Sausage & Mash, and more. We opted for the warming Slow Cooked Beef Stew and the Baked Cod Loin, which sounded delicious in a creamy lemon sauce. You order your meals at the counter and at the same time make your choice of the included drink (we treated ourselves to a Peroni and a soft drink), then everything is brought to your table by the super friendly staff. On top of the food and both meals were of the highest quality. The beef stew was served with buttery mashed potatoes, carrots and mushrooms, with the beef tenderloin pulled apart. A real warmer dish for the winter, perfect when the weather is as miserable as it was predicted for the half-yearly week. The Baked Cod Loin, which was probably the star of the show. The baked cod sat on mashed potatoes in a nice lemon-cream sauce, with mussels and samphire. Absolutely delicious and also a very generous portion. 10/10 would order this dish again. In fact, I’ll probably come back later in the week. The cod was cooked beautifully and the cream sauce had a hint of lemon without being overly intrusive. Phoenix offers a perfect in-between option during Leicester Restaurant Week, with quality food served in a more casual setting and suitable for both lunch and dinner. Of course, you can also watch a team dinner with a movie during your stay and Phoenix has the new James Bond show through Thursday, October 21, as well as Halloween specials on the weekend. The price for the Leicester Restaurant Week offer is £ 14 and includes all meals from the Specials menu and a selection of beverages (wine, bottled beer, soft drink or hot drink). There’s no need to reserve a table in advance, but be sure to download your voucher from the Leicester Restaurant Week website to take advantage of the offer. We weren’t obliged to give a positive review.
