Mesa Historical Museum will open a new exhibit titled “Play Ball: The Arizona Spring Training Experience,” which will explore the history of spring training, the origins of the Cactus League, the Cactus League Hall of Fame, and 100 years of Mesa baseball history . The exhibition includes photos, artifacts, and additional historical materials. The grand opening ceremony will take place on Saturday, March 6th, at 10 a.m. City of Phoenix Park Central Murals Artists Diana Calderón, Edgar Fernandez and Miguel Godoy have created six wall-style works of art installed on the south side of the Catalina Parking Garage in Park Central Mall. The 21-foot by 10-foot panels are collectively titled “The New Archive”. The artists, selected from 46 artists who followed a 2020 call for art, were tasked with creating works that reflected the history of Arizona, the surrounding neighborhood, midcentury modern architecture, and four themes: community, education, Health and equity. EXPAND Bobb Cooper receives a Lifetime Achievement Award during the 40th Annual Governor’s Arts Awards. Arizona Citizens for the Arts Lifetime Arts Award Bobb Cooper, producing artistic director of the Valley Youth Theater, will receive the first Lifetime Achievement Award during the 40th annual Governor’s Arts Awards ceremony on Friday, March 26th, was designed to be Honoring bequests, contributions to the arts, and contributions to Arizona. Cooper will celebrate its 25th anniversary with the Valley Youth Theater on March 20th. The awards are presented by the Office of the Governor and Arizona Citizens for the Arts. Lisa Sette Gallery Upcoming Exhibitions Lisa Sette Gallery has announced its series of exhibitions for 2021, featuring artists working with materials from synthetic human hair to beaded corsage needles. The “Nature and Structure” exhibition in spring 2021 includes works by Kim Cridler, Mayme Kratz and Marie Navarre. In the summer of 2021, Angela Ellsworth, whose art practice often reflects social themes and personal stories, will be exhibited, as well as Merryn Omotayo Alaka and Sam Fresquez, whose work deals with self-expression and public representation. For autumn 2021 the gallery is presenting a group exhibition entitled “Temporary in Nature”. Rumspringa by Jamilla Naji won first place in the 21st Artlink Juried Exhibition. Artlink Juried Exhibition Winner Artlink announced three winners for its 21st annual Artlink Juried Exhibition as part of Art Detour 33 on February 27th. The prizes went to Jamilla Naji for Rumspringa (first place), Lady Caress and Epik Dance Company for We Be (first up) and Joel Coplin for Mad Dance (second, second). Artists Brian Boner, Bill Dambrova, Danielle Wood, and YBtheArtTrapper received honorable mentions. The jury assessed works by more than 80 artists. Jurors included Julie Akerly, Antoinette Cauley, Tiffany Fairall, Rafael Navarro, and Mark Pomilio. The exhibition runs through June 13 at the FOUND: RE Phoenix Hotel. New Streetcar ArtSeveral artists recently installed artwork along the Valley Metro’s Tempe Streetcar line. Look for new work by Bobby Zokaites, Mary Lucking, and artists Simon Donovan and Ben Olmstead in several designated tram zones, including popular thoroughfares like Rio Salado Parkway and Mill Avenue. Art by Koryn Rolstad will also be installed along the line. Lucking has several designs along the Valley Metro Light Rail Line in Phoenix and Mesa.
