MILWAUKEE – Sherman Phoenix hosted a free food festival. More than 20 women-owned restaurants were represented on Sunday. From pizza. to pasta, wraps and everything in between – getting a free bite to eat on a Sunday afternoon at Sherman Phoenix wasn’t difficult. “There’s Pizza Britney Lucas. Lucas was one of hundreds who left the Free Food Festival happy. The five-hour festival was organized for the community by more than twenty women’s businesses.” It was funded by a $ 80,000 grant from the World Central Kitchen nonprofit. “They had funds for International Women’s Months and wanted to support women-owned businesses, so we did that today,” said Caitlin Cullen, owner of The Tandem in Milwaukee. After a year of COVID-19, the pandemic is still going on. The days are still tough for some, but the Sunday event brings a little relief during these difficult times. “” A lot of us fight out here and it’s good when people help you, said Cynthia Baker. Baker brought in her granddaughter outside for a bite to eat and enjoying the sunny weather. She was happy that her young granddaughter saw other strong women helping each other. “It just means that strong women survive together out here. We all stick together and survive together, “Baker said. The sandwiches kept coming back at the Rise and Grind Café. As staff made them in the kitchen. Young volunteers from the nonprofit for young women, GLOW 414, took them out to everyone who she wanted or needed. “That’s why GLOW stands for Girls Learning to be Outstanding Women, because women, we rock!” said Mikell Daniels.
