GLOBE, Arizona (AP) – A route between Metro Phoenix and the White Mountains in the eastern Arizona highlands remained closed on Saturday due to wildfire that burned on both sides of the freeway for a period (60 miles) between the US 60 Closed outskirts of Globe and the intersection with State Route 73 on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation. According to official information, the fire started about 5 kilometers northeast of Globe on Friday and from noon on Saturday burned an estimated 9.7 square kilometers of grass and scrub. Tankers and ground crew worked Friday to keep the fire out of ranches, mines and utility infrastructure, said. On Friday there were point fires on both sides of the freeway “and large planes working in the area made travel unsafe at the time,” officials told The Freeway, but damaged and smoldering crash barriers remained a safety issue, officials said. Officials said the fire was man-made and an investigator was “on the spot to find the source of ignition.”
