The University of Phoenix has released its 2020 Annual Academic Report, a comprehensive document describing the university’s pandemic response, operations, initiatives and outcomes as part of the university’s mission and vision to be the most trusted provider of career-relevant higher education for the Work to be recognized adults.
The report provides an overview of the university’s activities and has been published annually since 2008. The edition of the 2020 financial year comprises the three sections “Who we are”, “Who we support” and “What we do” and this year z offers an overview of the pandemic experiences and reactions of the university.

In 2020 the university developed initiatives to address the changing environment, including:
- Career Services for Life® with 1-to-1 career coaching, preparation of résumés and interview preparation for students and alumni for the duration of their careers;
- Competency-based degrees, which enable professionals to use their experience for a faster path to a degree;
- job-oriented education that links coursework to the type of skills employers seek, based on data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics;
- Continuing education courses that are competence-oriented, self-determined and provide learners with the professional skills that employers are looking for;
- Continuous engagement with online tools such as the Phoebe® 24/7 chat assistant and the MyPhoenix ™ student portal to support time flexibility for working adult students; and
- 3 + 1 transfer path that allows students to complete 87 credits at a participating community college and the remaining 33 credits at the University of Phoenix for specific undergraduate programs.

In a year of renewed focus on diversity and social injustice, the report highlights how the University of Phoenix is improving its learning and workplace environment through new Diversity, Equality, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) initiatives like this Inclusive Cafe, a. The virtual meeting point has developed further to discuss the possibilities of growing together in the DEIB. The report describes the university’s diverse student body, highlights the stories and experiences of alumni, and shares the contributions of the faculty and staff to communities across the country.
While the U.S. Department of Education reports data that only reflects full-time first-time students (FTFT) forming a traditional student body, the University of Phoenix primarily caters to working adult students who often juggle jobs and families during their college education. The report describes how the university tracks retention rates and uses predictive analytics to identify students who need additional support so that interventions can come sooner and reduce the challenges to student progression.
Responsible and fair borrowing is a focus section of the report, including an overview of cohort default rates (CDR) of student loans as defined by the US Department of Education; The University of Phoenix reports an 11.1 rate, which has declined over the past three years and is still below the average for company-owned schools.
The report also describes the university’s focus on the application of learning in professional contexts through the Learn, Practice, Apply (LPA) learning framework, as well as that the university’s practitioner faculty has an average of 26.9 years of work experience and 12 years of teaching experience with the university .
In addition, the report provides detailed information about the industry advisory boards that inform the curriculum planning of the university’s seven colleges and provides insight into the development of competencies identified by employers as top soft skills and used as the university’s learning objectives and for which the university’s Student performance is specifically measured and exceeds 90% in all five competencies.
