Bacanora is an intimate space that includes a room that has been serving mesquite smoked Sonoran food since the restaurant opened on Grand Avenue in February 2021, the building that used to be the Barrio Cafe Gran Reserva. With bright pink painted walls and a small menu of dishes cooked on a rustic Sonoran grill, people immediately became aware of this. I called the restaurant an “instant Phoenix classic” in one of my first plays as the new restaurant reviewer for The Arizona Republic. And now a national lifestyle publication is also drawing attention to it. Love at First Bite: Why This Grand Avenue Restaurant Is an Instant Phoenix Classic On November 18, Esquire dropped its list of Best New Restaurants in America 2021, which includes Restaurant Phoenix in 40 other notable locations from New York to Chicago. To compose the list, Esquire employed four different writers who traveled the country and dined in hundreds of restaurants. Bacanora appears prominently in the introduction to the article, where Esquire’s Lifestyle and Cultural Director Kevin Sintumuang notes that this year the magazine was drawn to “eating from raw, elemental fire and charcoal,” which is the southwestern experience that Bacanora offers. National Recognition: This Phoenix restaurant made the New York Times list of ‘America’s Favorite Restaurants’ they command the flame of the massive, custom-made grill, “he writes.” Any moment you’re going to be elote blackening, homemade flour tortillas That warm up, char spatchcocked chicken and sear massive rib eye steaks, anything over burning mesquite will often make cold crudos and sour aguachiles that help balance the menu; inspired by Nogales, Baviácora, and the Sonoran region. “That’s what this restaurant is about,” he said, “if you come to my house to eat, that’s what you will eat. This is the food I’ve cooked all my life, and I just happened to open a restaurant just to get other people to enjoy it too. “Details: Bacanora, 1301 Grand Ave., Unit 1, Phoenix. 602-612-4018, bacanoraphx.com.
