Here’s a look at art news related to the Phoenix subway so you can stay connected with the creative side of the city.Tempe Artspace Plans The city of Tempe is nearing a deal with Artspace Projects, a Minnesota-based nonprofit. There are plans to build 68 living and working apartments for artists at a location on Apache Boulevard between Rural Road and McClintock Drive. The city would own the land and Artspace would have a 60 year lease. A final public hearing is due to take place during a virtual meeting of Tempe City Council on March 25th at 6pm. Black Artist CohortPhoenix-based [nueBOX] launched its first Black Artist Cohort, a three month residency program that offers space, funding, and other benefits to nurture creative and leadership skills. Participating artists are Shaniece Brazwell, Trinity Miracle (alias Afroetic) and Alexander Patrick. EXPAND scene from Childsplay’s Dreamers. Jordan Gilliam Childsplay AuditionsChildsplay is conducting video auditions for its 2021-22 season that will include a national tour of Schoolhouse Rock Live !, school performances of Dreamers, a world premiere titled Selena Maria Sings, and several additional productions at the Herberger Theater Center. Auditions are open until April 9th. Art Print Project Twelve artists were selected for the Trajectory Print Project, which was launched by the Phoenix Institute of Contemporary Art to “explore the richness and diversity of art” in the metropolis of Phoenix and Maricopa County present. A 12-part portfolio of their work, created by Brent Bond of Santo Press, is slated for release in December 2021. Featured artists include Rigo Flores, Mary Meyer, Christy Pütz, Chris Vena and Vera Vo. Juror Award winner Becky McDonah has created art related to pandemics. Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum Crafts Exhibit Award Winner Metalsmith Becky McDonah, the jury winner for the 41st annual “Contemporary Crafts” exhibition at the Mesa Contemporary Art Museum, currently has a solo exhibition entitled “Preserving Precious Elements” at the museum, where she has a Reliquiar uses approach to address the relic-like status of pandemic-related items such as toilet paper, face masks, and hand sanitizer. The free exhibition runs until April 25th. Shuttered Venue Operators Grants The US Small Business Association will open applications for its Shuttered Venue Operators Grant program on April 8th to cinema operators, museum operators and talent representatives. Please refer to the US SBA website for admission requirements and other details. EXPAND Rosemarie Dombrowski gives readings at several Poetry Month events in Phoenix. Ofelia Montelongo Poetry Month Celebrations Several literary organizations will host live and virtual events during National Poetry Month in April. The line-up includes an ASU Zine Fest (April 2–2), a festival of micro-readings and micro-collection introductions (April 5–26), a public poetry art installation entitled Poetry Illuminated (April 10), and more . Find additional events at the ASU Piper Center, Palabras Bilingual Bookstore, Wasted Ink Zine Distro, and other Phoenix creative spaces. EXTEND Part of the new mural First Use = First Rights by Jeremie Bacpac Franco. Jeremie Bacpac Franco New Murals A new mural was unveiled during a ceremony on March 20 in Barrios Unitas Park, near I-17 and 16th Street. The collective work of art was created as a memorial that honors indigenous knowledge and culture. Other recently completed murals include First Use = First Rights by Jeremie Bacpac Franco, which deals with indigenous water rights and history. Your mural is near the Third Avenue Bridge for the Grand Canalscape.
