Some Arizona mayors support new passenger rail between Tucson and Phoenix | Arizona News

PHOENIX (3TV / CBS 5) – Several Arizona mayors are helping Amtrak build a new passenger train line between Tucson and Phoenix that will make it easier for Arizona residents to travel back and forth. The new service would help build the region’s economy, increase travel opportunities and reduce the carbon footprint. A letter was sent to Arizona Congressmen including Kyrsten Sinema, Raul M. Grijalva, Andy Biggs, Ruben Gallego, Mark Kelly, Debbie Lesko, Greg Stanton, and more. Together with Romero, Mayors of Phoenix, Goodyear, Mesa, Glendale, Avondale, Chandler, Oro Valley, South Tucson, Marana and Sahuarita signed the letter. “We haven’t offered rail passenger transport between Tucson and Phoenix since the mid-1990s. This new service will bring important economic benefits across the region, increase travel opportunities for millions of Arizonans, and help us reduce our carbon footprint, ”said Tucson Mayor Regina Romero. She says funding for this project is part of the proposed bipartisan infrastructure bill that will allow Arizona to have rail transportation like other states. The drive between Phoenix and Tucson would take about 2.5 hours, according to Amtrak. Three daily trips would be offered between Tucson-Phoenix-Buckeye, and the service alone would raise $ 77.7 million annually, along with $ 1.9 billion in economic activity. In addition to Tucson and Phoenix, the Amtrak service will provide a direct link between Los Angeles and Tucson. A trip between Los Angeles and Phoenix would take approximately 7.43 hours. It would be about ten hours from Los Angeles to Tucson. “This new corridor connects the rapidly growing Phoenix and Tucson areas with daily multi-frequency connections between downtown Tucson through Phoenix and the western suburb of Buckeye. It also connects Phoenix and Tucson with Los Angeles with increased daily service.
