One of the community’s youngest hopes, the Sherman Phoenix (3536 W. Fond du Lac Ave.), will reopen on Tuesday. As a hub for small businesses, especially those rooted on the north side of the city, the building remained closed for the duration of the pandemic. A celebration is scheduled for Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with a visit from Governor Tony Evers at 1 p.m. In addition to the visit, the event also features free food from Sherman Phoenix tenants, music, and self-guided tours of the building, and more. Many of the companies that comprise the hub have used their downtime to renovate or develop their space. “The Sherman Phoenix has a special kind of energy that cannot be duplicated. You can feel it as soon as you walk through the doors, ”Queen’s Closet CEO Chandra Cooper said in a statement. “We are more than a marketplace and a corporate hub, we are hope and future for the community.” In addition to the reopening ceremony, the Sherman Phoenix announced the formation of a non-profit organization, the Sherman Phoenix Foundation, to manage and initiate programming in the building Will create a model for strengthening color communities across the country. A $ 300,000 investment from American Family Insurance will help fund the start-up phase of the organization. Since opening in 2018, Sherman Phoenix has been a development focus on the city’s North Side. Home to over 25 small businesses, the common room is sure to be a welcome sign that the building is full of activity again.
