Top Milwaukee chefs create dishes inspired by personal reflections on the community MILWAUKEE (June 7, 2021) – As SHARP Literacy prepares for a busy summer with educational programs following the COVID-related learning loss, eight Milwaukee chefs support one charity fundraiser not to be missed. Unwrapped 2021 will be held on Thursday, July 15, 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Sherman Phoenix in Milwaukee’s Sherman Park Community, a key area of mission-oriented work for SHARP. Now in its sixth year, the annual Unwrapped event brings together extremely creative and philanthropic chefs who invest their time and talent using McDonald’s ingredients to create gourmet starters, main courses and desserts. This year, the challenge for any chef is to deconstruct the McDonald’s menu and use at least three core components in a dish that is reminiscent of the community they currently live in or their own childhood. You can have dinner in person at the Sherman Phoenix, take out dinner for dinner, or donate meals to The Tandem Restaurant. Led by Chef Caitlin Cullen, The Tandem has been offering free meal delivery programs to thousands of Milwaukee residents since March 2020. “The summer slide has taken on a whole new meaning after the COVID-related school closings, which makes SHARP’s basic literacy work more meaningful than that,” said Lynda Kohler, President and CEO of SHARP. “By holding our event in one of the communities we serve and our chefs reflecting on their past and present, we hope we can combine the summer fun with the serious message about the importance of our work in Milwaukee, Waukesha and Racine urban schools. Summer Inspiration For Brian Taborski, Executive Chef at Saz’s Hospitality Group, summer time has always meant a little more time to experiment in the kitchen. As a young boy who grew up in Lynwood, Illinois, Taborski always knew he would be a chef and began pursuing a career in the culinary world at the age of 14. His first summer job was washing dishes in an Italian restaurant, and when he wasn’t learning everything in the restaurant, Taborski practiced his craft at home, starting with cookbook recipes, before moving on to A favorite of the Taborski family was Summer Apple-Blueberry Crisp, which he’ll recreate for Unwrapped with McDonald’s Unsweetened Oatmeal, Frozen Blueberries, Diced Apples, Frozen Apple Pie, and McGriddles among his other ingredients. “For me, the experiences of visiting farmers’ markets, growing my own groceries, and enjoying an outdoor dining experience were all lessons I learned as a kid in Lynwood,” said Taborski. “For me, the flavors of a sweet summer dessert are as good as it gets; And when you add the charity component of what we’re doing with SHARP Literacy, every bite is even more special. ”Besides Taborski, other participating chefs are (in alphabetical order): Alexa Alfaro and Matt Alfaro from Meat on The Street Jason Alston from Heaven’s Table BBQ Monica Blake from Rise and Grind Café Marco Garcia from Modern Maki Angela Rondinelli from Downtown Kitchen Marcia Taylor and Mark Taylor from Lush Gourmet Popcorn David Wolfe from Joey Gerard’s – A Bartolotta Supper Club Awards and Leadership At the event, SHARP will present the newly named “ Bartolotta Partners of the Year “awards that recognize the spirit of partnership and collaboration that the past Joe Bartolotta brought with him in everything he did. This year’s awards will be given to Beer Capitol Distributing, SHARP board member and treasurer Nancy Mehlberg-Tomko and McDonald’s owner / operator Jeff Steren. Beer Capitol has a long history of supporting Unwrapped, with beverages donated in kind and a variety of auction items over the years.
