It’s a big week for events around Phoenix, both Halloween-related and non-Halloween. Over the next seven days, see art in downtown Phoenix, carve pumpkins in the Melrose District, start your morning with a yoga class in Tempe, and more. “Home (In) Security” “Home” is a rather charged term that explains why so many artists explore its meaning in their work. Modified Arts, 407 East Roosevelt Street, recently reopened its indoor gallery space after a lengthy pandemic break with an exhibition entitled “Homeland (In) Security”. Participating artists Gloria Martinez-Granados, Karen Nazario, Elizabeth Pineda and Yvette Serrano try to share diverse forms of expression of home and at the same time explore complex ideas of belonging and displacement in the context of the pandemic and various socio-political factors. Gallery opening hours are 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday, October 25th, the Local First Arizona staff will be in attendance. The gallery employees are on site on the first and third Friday and Saturday afternoon. The exhibition runs until November 5th. Entry to the gallery is free. Lynn Trimble Pumpkin Carving Party Grab your pumpkins and spend an evening carving them at the Thunderbird Lounge, 710 West Montecito Avenue on Monday October 25th, Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown will be screened. Participation in the event from 21 years of age, which starts at 6:00 p.m., is free of charge. Benjamin Leatherman Morning Yoga Class Start your day with a free yoga class on the Tempe campus of Arizona State University. The Live Well Yoga Series, presented by ASU 365 Community Union + Live Well @ ASU, takes place on the Coca Cola Sun Deck of Sun Devil Stadium, 500 East Veterans Way, Tempe. Bring a mat, towel, and some water to class, which is taught by a rotating line-up of local teachers. Classes are public and all levels are invited to practice, from beginner to expert. Registration is required for the 7 o’clock course. Jennifer Goldberg Harlem Shuffle If you’ve been into book releases and all the excitement for new titles, you probably know Colson Whitehead’s Harlem Shuffle. Well, you have a reason to read it now because USA Today editor Barbara VanDenburgh will host a free discussion at the Changing Hands Bookstore, 300 West Camelback Road on Wednesday, October 27th at 7pm. Written by Carlson Whitehead, it’s a robbery, rip-off, and shutdown story set in Harlem in the 1960s. The discussion marks the First Draft Book Club’s happy return to the First Draft Book Bar, where if you feel like browsing the bookstore looking for new titles to add to your own collection, you can do more than just sip, read, and talk or book-inspired gifts for all of the people on your vacation list. Lynn Trimble Howl-O-Ween Dog Costume Contest Dress up your pups and take them to this free event and happy hour from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday October 27 at W Scottsdale, 7277 East Camelback Road. The evaluation will take place at 7:00 p.m. Here you can register online.
