Roberta Odile Scott, known to family and friends as Skip, grew up in Belleville, Illinois. Skip was raised by her father, Morris Pirson, a Belgian miner, and Agnes Pirson, of Irish descent. As a child, Skip was valued for her fearless imagination, limitless curiosity, and love for new people. From a young age she had an innate spirituality and connection with nature and lived with a rare spark of life that only increased as she got older. Skip graduated from Belleville West High School, where she was involved in various clubs. At nineteen she met the love of her life, Warren “Scotty” Chesney Scott, who worked at her father’s gas station. Skip and Scotty were married in 1957 at Union United Methodist Church in Belleville, Illinois, and raised four children together – Morris, Michelle, Michael, and Kelly. Skip and Scotty were married for 62 years; together they created a love that was sparkling, alive, and everlasting. Her love story is one that is inspired and lived on by her ten grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Skip was her children as an embroidery magician, an extraordinary Halloween costume maker, a cake queen, a remarkable quilter, a first-class cook for chicken noodle soup and a world-class ironing machine – who especially enjoy crisp cotton sheets and straight Levi jeans. Skip would extend her gifts as a mother to those who were depressed, lonely, or sick, inviting her to his home, and circling her in love and family. True to the nickname “Skipper”, she loved the sea. At a young age it was not surprising that she swam long distances to greet ships on the horizon and, in old age, enjoyed her favorite La Jolla beach with tea in hand and sand between her red-painted toes, Skip was a prolific and authentic writer. At 63, Skip honored her passion by submitting her work to the local Paradise Valley newspaper, for which she became an avid award-winning columnist and shared her gift of words and insight with the Arizona Valley, Grandma. She spent many afternoons volunteering to read in each grandchild’s class at school. She taught her grandchildren to find magic in small and large, to always make time for tea and good conversation, to start the morning with a rose and to face life gratefully and gracefully. They remember how they were lulled to sleep by the sound of their voices, telling the stories of moons, mice and wondrous worlds. Skip’s favorite pastimes include family, friends, her dog Harry, writing, reading, art, plays, opera, genealogy, traveling, sitting by the ocean, Arizona sunsets, full moons, sparklers, humming a tune, joking around, and a fresh orange every morning. These are the things that make you remember them. Please join us in honoring a life well lived.
