For all Phoenix Suns fans, be sure to tap the wood before reading this. You can’t be too careful, especially when it comes to something as crazy and unpredictable as the NBA. But with hexes and superstitions already factored in, it’s safe to acknowledge how flawless the suns look right now – and their season’s trajectory is based on what history tells us. Currently with a 12-3 record, only the Golden State Warriors have a better win rate than the Valley Boys. If the playoffs started today, the second seed of the Western Conference will go back to the Suns, preparing them for a clash with the first survivor of the play-in tournament. With this season only a month old today, looking this far ahead feels like a silly errand. The suns don’t want to bite too big here and choke on their own food. Instead, they prefer to stay focused and do things game after game while still remaining confident. However, with more relying on the confidence-building side of this equation, the suns won’t have to look far to find any reason to feel strong. If you leaf through the league’s history books, it becomes clear that their start to the season not only endorses them as a playoff team, but will also make it to the NBA final again. Over the past decade, the top 15 games to begin a season by a former NBA Finals team include the following: 2015-16 Golden State Warriors (15-0) 2016-17 Cleveland Cavaliers (13-2) 2016-17 Golden State Warriors (13-2) 2013-14 San Antonio Spurs (13-2) 2012-22 Phoenix Suns (12-3) 2018-19 Golden State Warriors (12-3) 2013-14 Miami Heat (12-3) 2012-13 Miami Heat (12-3) We don’t know how the Phoenix season will go from here, but every other team above returned to the finals after those starts, which certainly presents the Suns as a likely roster doing the same will. Well worth it, the 2012-13 Heat, 2013-14 Spurs and 2016-17 Warriors all won the championship after those starts too. The start for the Suns has to be encouraging given the team’s resilience alone. It may feel impossible to remember at this point, but the Suns started their season with a hangover from last year and stumbled into a 1-3 start. The team’s current upswing doesn’t just look impressive in itself, but even more so when you consider how Phoenix had to change things before. The Suns are still running an 11-game winning streak, with the Denver Nuggets, San Antonio Spurs, Cleveland Cavaliers, New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets next rounding off their first 20 games. The 2015-15 Warriors only lost their 25th game, making it impossible for this year’s Suns to beat them. However, if Phoenix can keep winning and beating all of these teams, they’ll pull in the 2016-17 Warriors – who, as mentioned – actually won everything for the second best start in 20 games.
