PHOENIX (AP) – A Phoenix police officer died after being hit by a driver who ran over a red light and also died, authorities said Tuesday. The accident occurred Monday evening after 27-year-old Officer Ginarro New drove his police SUV into an intersection and was hit by another car, Phoenix police said in a statement. The impact hurled the police SUV through a brick wall and lay on its side in a parking lot, the statement said. Firefighters freed New from the car and took him to a hospital, but he died of his injuries. Pictures from local media showed News Auto, with most of the back half torn off. The other driver, a 30-year-old man, was pronounced dead and his identity was not disclosed. First indications suggest that the driver was driving too fast, said the police. New joined the department in July 2019, Police Spokeswoman Sgt. Said Anne Justus. He leaves behind his wife, mother, brother and grandmother. “I would like to express my deep gratitude and appreciation to the doctors, the nurses, the surgeons who tried to save Officer New and the Phoenix Fire Department who did everything in their power to save his life,” Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams told reporters Tuesday morning. Arizona Governor Doug Ducey ordered that flags on all state buildings should be lowered to half-staff by sunset.
