A man graciously receives food and water from two members of the Phoenix Pattaya Rotary Club. Members of the Phoenix Pattaya Rotary Club, led by President Dieter Barth, came together to distribute food to destitute men, women and children suffering from the painful effects of the Covid-19 pandemic that is affecting the lives of millions of people around the world World has ravaged over in the past two years. On August 29, the Rotarians of the German-speaking club set up their food station on Pattaya Second Road near Soi 6, where they distributed 300 boxes of cooked meals and water to the impoverished population of Pattaya. Most of these people lived and worked along 2nd Street. They were employees of tourism-oriented businesses such as bars and restaurants, souvenir shops, and massage parlors, all of which were closed. Another sector of workers who lost virtually all of their income were motorcycle taxi drivers. A Rotarian distributes boxes of groceries to the children. During the heyday of business and tourism, motorcycle taxis were the most functional and practical means of transport for Thais and foreigners alike. A motorcycle taxi driver said, “Back then we were quite busy during the day, but the busiest time was at night when we served the nightlife clerks all evening and late into the night when they had to drive home after work. “Tourists and foreign residents were also our very good customers. They preferred to ride motorbikes when going into town and again when returning to their homes or hotels late at night. You felt safe driving with us. President Dieter Barth said, “I would like to express my sincere thanks to Pattaya City Hall for providing a team of security personnel to ensure that the food distribution was carried out in an orderly and safe manner. “Given that there are thousands of people in dire need of food, Rotarians have decided that we will raise funds very soon and organize another food-distribution mission.” President Dieter Barth (left) and Andreas Labinski show the City hall letter on the organization of the charity food project in the city.
