PHOENIX – The $ 1.2 trillion infrastructure bill signed earlier this month brings millions of federal dollars to the East Valley’s Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport for repairs and upgrades. The airport is likely to receive $ 22.6 million over the next five years, at a time when it is seeing record-breaking commercial passenger growth, according to the office of U.S. Senator Kyrsten Sinema. Mesa Mayor John Giles, who attended the Infrastructure Bill signing ceremony at the White House, said the federal dollars would help modernize and expand the airport. “We’re going to add additional gates there because we’ve had a record year in commercial air traffic at this airport since this summer,” said Giles. The airport currently has 10 gates. Other improvements include the replacement of four aging portable gates that were temporarily installed in 2007. There will be an interior corridor connecting these gates to the other terminal. Giles said the airport improvements are “the first thing you will notice where we say it was paid for by that infrastructure bill”. He added that his city will also receive infrastructure funding for a variety of other projects ranging from modernizing roads to adding more charging points for electric vehicles. Passengers using the airport can already see some improvement projects, such as a new air traffic control tower that is 20 meters higher than the current one.
