MESA, AZ – The commercial air travel industry took a huge hit in 2020, but things are not only normalizing, but in some cases better than ever. The Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport recorded a record number of passengers for the month of June. Valley’s secondary airport, located to the southeast of Mesa, flown a total of 151,219 passengers through its terminal in June. Not only was it the most passengers in June, but also the first time since March 2020 when Gateway Airport had higher monthly passenger numbers than last year. “Families are making up for lost trips and have come to know the convenience and affordability of Gateway Airport,” John Giles [bizjournals.com], the mayor of Mesa and the chairman of the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Authority, said in a statement. “June marks the start of the summer travel season, and we are encouraged and hope that this trend will continue.” Gateway Airport is primarily used by private travelers and leisure travel is one of the bright spots for commercial airlines.
