Phoenix couple is cooking again for the community months after the food truck exploded Robert and Amber Everson will be back at work in the fall of 2021, cooking their famous brisket for Bama Barbeque. PHOENIX – Robert Everson and his wife Amber were on the job one minute serving grilled dishes and the next they were running for their lives in April when their food truck went into an explosion. Everson’s new custom-built food truck caught fire after a gas tank explosion in Phoenix. Robert remembers running for his life. “My chef jacket at home was on fire. My pants, my feet, my legs. I ran and screamed and asked people to help me,” said Robert. Robert is a barber who became a self-taught grill master and built a business with his wife. Their barbecue food truck would drive through town until the COVID-19 pandemic slows everything down. “We’re out there just now,” said Robert. “COVID pretty much closed us down, and then, unfortunately, we will be out for a few months now.” The Eversons spent several days in the Valleywise Burn Unit. Robert was burned over 30% of his body while Amber was in rehab trying to learn to walk again. “When I ran and screamed while I burned, I thought, ‘This is how I die,'” said Robert. Both have now recovered from their painful injuries. Months later the couple is back in action Phoenix couple is back in action after the food truck explosion Robert and Amber are back in action after months of recovery until autumn 2021, cooking their famous brisket for Bama Barbeque. The couple prepare to serve the community that has given them so much support over the past few months. “Everyone from all over the valley, from all over the country, reached out to us in some way, whether it was an email, a phone call or helping out with fundraisers at the festivals,” said Robert on Oct. 22nd they are back in business at the AZ Feastivals in Queen Creek. “At the time, I was so shocked by what happened to me. It didn’t really affect me until days later,” he added. After such a traumatic experience, one could move on to something else, but the Eversons didn’t want that. “I couldn’t let something like this that I knew was a total accident, a wacky accident, put me down and make me go back in a different direction… I don’t work like that. I am determined and I know what I have here, “said Robert. The couple got a new truck and are ready for business.” I love to cook. I love going out and showing off my cooking skills and seeing people smile when they try our food, “he said. Customers greeted the Everson with open arms.” To know what happened, to know what they went through have, all they had to go through to come back, be here again and do what they love to do is absolutely great and I had to come and show my support, “said one customer.” I got home early from work to come. It’s that simple. I had to go out to see them, “said another customer. The first day back couldn’t have been better.” To see all those smiling faces waiting in line to eat Bama BBQ … it’s great, “said Robert. The community is helping the Queen Creek family fundraiser to help food truck owners seriously injured in the blast. The food truck explosion left Robert Everson burned more than 30% of his body. His Ms. Amber is still in rehab and is learning to walk again, but something sweet came out of the fire as Robert and Amber’s competitors have turned into colleagues of sorts as they work to use the proceeds from sales during the fundraiser at Quen Creek Festival to help the Eversons get back on their feet. One of the participating establishments is Woodbarn BBQ. “The whole thing about food trucks and small businesses is that we’re a family so our first conversation after we learned what happened to Robert was how we can help, ”said Skylar Hittle of Woodbarn BBQ. “100% of our sales go direct to Robert tonight so hopefully they can get back on their feet.” “So that these guys get in and donate some of the money they might need to pay their bills and support their families, they take care of us too. That means a lot to us, ”said Robert.
