PHOENIX (3TV / CBS 5) – Dr. Laura Kueny has been working as an optician in the Valley for two years. She specializes in pediatrics, a demographic group of physicians, says Dr. Kueny, is rare. Due to the lack of ophthalmologists for children, says Dr. Kueny, many of your patients drive three to four hours to an appointment. Some have to cross the border. “So if we are just catching the children who can travel, who have the means to travel, whose neglect is the big question?” She said. When COVID-19 hit and the border closed, even their patients with a visa could not cross the border for medical care. When they could not travel to her, she went to them. “Our first clinic in Puerto Peñasco was in October 2021 and we’ve been going monthly since then,” she said. Dr. Kueny says she quickly realized how many people need eye care and started Little Eyes International, a nonprofit that offers free eye exams and glasses to kids in Rocky Point. “People come in buses,” says co-founder Dr. Ghadeer Makoshi. Dr. Makoshi says the nonprofit has so far relied on donated spots from eyewear companies and the generosity of friends and family. Still, the goal is to open a permanent clinic in Puerto Peñasco and offer free bespoke glasses in one visit. “You can’t learn if you can’t see and if you can’t see and can’t learn. How can you be productive in your life and in your communities,” Makoshi says. If you would like to donate to Little Eyes International, click here.
