Phoenix City Council has allocated a portion of its COVID-19 aid to staff programs and childcare. PHOENIX – Phoenix City Council voted Tuesday for an allocation of approximately $ 36 million of its federal COVID-19 aid to programs that help people in need of professional training or homeless. In June, the city drew up a strategic plan for how it would spend the $ 198 million it received through the American Rescue Plan Act to help Phoenix recover from the pandemic. According to the plan, approximately $ 143 million would be spent on “community investments,” an additional $ 50 million saved on city operations and $ 5 million saved as an emergency. The council approved this week to spend a large portion of its ARPA dollars on services that can help Phoenix residents get back to work or become homeless. Approximately $ 10 million of the funds were allocated to an apprenticeship program to help residents complete courses or professional training through Maricopa Community Colleges. Another $ 10 million has been allocated to provide mental health services or substance abuse treatment to the homeless. Phoenix has allocated $ 12 million to a lottery program that awards $ 1,000 to families in need. The scholarships can only be spent on necessities such as food, transportation, or childcare.
