Thirty-four deer from Phoenix Park were killed this week in what the Public Works Bureau calls “population control”. The cull, which took place on Tuesday, killed twelve male deer and twenty-two female deer. The OPW told Dublin Live that the exercise is essential to keep the existing deer population in good health. They said, “The deer population in Phoenix Park is actively managed to keep the herd at a sustainable size. “In Ireland there are no natural enemies like wolves for wild deer. If the animals were not removed, food would become scarce and, ultimately, more animals would suffer. “Without population control, there would be other well-being issues such as low body fat, malnutrition, and high winter death rates from parasites and other pathogens in deer. “The OPW manages the herd according to the recommendations of the School of Biology & Environmental Science at University College Dublin and the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine (Deer Management in Ireland a Framework for Action – 2015). “The OPW also monitors international best practice, which includes other wildlife parks such as Royal Parks London, whose wildlife management practices are supported by the British Deer Society and the Deer Initiative of England.
