Mayor’s Arts Awards Nominations Nominations are now being accepted for the 2021 Mayor’s Arts Awards, which recognize a collaborative art innovator and an outstanding artist in each of the following categories: literary, multidisciplinary, performing, visual and youth. Artists can nominate themselves and community members can apply to be part of a jury that includes previous winners. Nominations and applications are due by October 4th. The award ceremony will take place on November 18th in Hance Park. Stolen Painting The Lost Leaf on Roosevelt Row recently posted a notice on Facebook about a painting by artist Zach Willett that was stolen from the bar and creative room where it was hung on a wall. The Lost Leaf urges anyone with information to either contact the venue, the artist (via @pillowfortmedia), or return the artwork “no questions asked”. Memory of the artists of Phoenix Fridas The artist collective Phoenix Fridas is mourning the loss of two of its members this year, Luisa Leon Ruiz and Monique Sanderson-Mata, whose many contributions to the art scene have included working with young people and coordinating opportunities for fellow artists to make their work . The collective, founded in 2004, is inspired by the renowned artist Frida Kahlo of the 20th century. Lynn Trimble Tempe Center for the Arts The Tempe Center for the Arts reopened on September 7th. The center houses an art gallery, two theaters and other creative spaces. The new program slated for this season includes a number of emerging artists called 48 Live, a creative wellness series called SHAPE, and an Indigenous Arts Arizona Festival curated by Violet Duncan. Proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 is required for ticketed events entry, and the venue requires masks for all visitors 2 years and older. Art Leadership Change Arizona Citizens for the Arts, an advocacy group that promotes art-friendly public policies at the state and local levels, plans to initiate a formal search for a new executive director. Joseph Benesh, who served as Executive Director for two years, moves into a new role with the group this month. Synergy Salons and Survey Downtown Voices Coalition, a group of community leaders and residents in multiple Phoenix neighborhoods, plan to host a series of Synergy Salons to kick off their new Activating Spaces, Promoting Voices initiative, which will focus on BIPOC- Concentrated creative. Community members can take part in an online DVC survey until October 1st. The survey results will help drive creative programming at DVC in the future. click to enlarge The Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts has changed its COVID-19 protocols. Lynn Trimble New COVID-19 Precautions The Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts is introducing a change to its COVID-19 Precautions. The center requires all employees to be vaccinated by September 30th. Starting October 1, all guests must demonstrate a negative COVID-19 test or provide evidence of full vaccination within 72 hours of attending an event or performance. Masks are highly recommended at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts and the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, where visitors need time-limited tickets. Arizona Commission on the Arts The Arizona Commission on the Arts, one of over 50 state and judicial arts agencies in the United States, will be reauthorized in 2022. Founded more than 50 years ago after the founding of the National Endowment for the Arts, the agency manages Arizona State and NEA funds that help support the arts sector and increase access to and participation in the arts across Arizona. James Turrell Award When the Japan Art Association announced its Praemium Imperiale winners on September 14, the winners included two US residents – artist James Turrell and musician Yo-Yo Ma. Turrell lives in Northern Arizona, where he continues work on Roden Crater, a monumental land art piece created from an extinct volcano. The awards recognize artists “for their achievements, for the impact they have had on art internationally, and for their role in enriching the global community”. click to enlarge Ballet Arizona will perform “In Creases” during Contemporary Moves in November. Alexander Iziliaev Ballet Arizona Lineup Ballet Arizona has announced the trio of works to be featured in Contemporary Moves, which will open the company’s 36th anniversary season on October 29 at the Dorrance Theater. The line-up includes In Creases with choreography by Justin Peck and music by Philip Glass, Les Patineurs with choreography by Sir Frederick Ashton and music by Giacomo Meyerbeer and Mambaz with choreography by Nayon Iovino and music by Josiel Perez and Company. Danelle Plaza Two development teams interested in converting Danelle Plaza, a mall and creative hub in Southern and Mill in Tempe, have published proposals to convert the square into a mixed-use space with living. The release follows the city’s decision earlier this year to cancel a qualification application issued for the site on which Tempe owns part of the land. The ASU Art Museum recently opened “Undoing Time: Art and Histories of Incarceration”. The Phoenix Art Museum is showing “Oscar Muñoz: Invisibilia”, the first mid-career survey by this Colombian artist to be presented in the American Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. Young Phoenix Artists. ”The Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum is showing” The Beyond Within, “which includes a tool drum kit painted by Alex Gray. Scottsdale Poet Award Winner Lois Roma-Deeley began her tenure as the new Poet Award Winner for the City of Scottsdale on August 6th. Their term of office runs until December 24, 2024. The inaugural poet award winner Bob Frost was in office from 2010 to 2021. The appointment comes with an annual fee of $ 1,500. As a Poet Prize Winner, Roma-Deeley is tasked with “raising the profile of poetry, poets and literary arts through workshops, performances and advocacy across the community”. Keynote Art Speaker Derek Fordjour will be the keynote speaker of the Lernhardt Lecture at the Phoenix Art Museum on October 27th, the lens of success and achievement. “The museum recently acquired its 2020 The Futility of Achievement through its Lernhardt Contemporary Art initiative. Lynn Trimble Roosevelt Row Survey Results Roosevelt Row Community Development Corporation is preparing to announce the results of a recent survey that will help “define the future of the Roosevelt Row Arts District.” The results of the survey, in which 1,081 people took part, will be presented on Tuesday, September 21, as part of a fundraising campaign in autumn on the equinox. Around 20 percent of those questioned stated that they were an artist. The survey revealed several suggestions for improving the area, including affordable housing, more parks / green spaces, and more security. Five15 Arts Collective The Five15 Arts Collective accepts applications from artists working in a variety of media and styles who are interested in joining the group for a period from February 2022 to June 2023. The contract includes a solo exhibition in the Chartreuse Gallery and participation in five group exhibitions in the Grand Avenue art space. Members pay $ 75 monthly dues and take on other duties to run the collective. New members must be fully vaccinated at the start of their term of office. Applications are possible until November 30th. Arts Leader publishes Julie Akerly, co-founder of the Phoenix-based artist incubator [nueBOX] with Matthew Mosher in 2014, moved from Phoenix to Washington, DC. The choreographer, dancer and art administrator previously worked as a community arts specialist for the city of Tempe. Akerly moved to accept a position as a dance programmer for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Upcoming Exhibitions Several new exhibitions will open in the Phoenix Metro Art Rooms in the coming weeks and months, including “COLOR: the beauty and science of color,” which opens October 1st in the gallery at the Tempe Center for the Arts, ” Light Sensitive “on October 9th at Art Intersection in Gilbert,” A Peculiar Nature: Artwork by Christy Puetz and Rebecca Blume Rothman “, which opens on October 9th at the Vision Gallery in Chandler, and” Remembering the Future: 100 Years of Inspiring Art ”, which opens on October 24th at the Heard Museum. Kyllan Maney Scottsdale Quarter Artwork Several artists paint benches in the Scottsdale Quarter. Kyllan Maney’s bench with its iconic symmetrical designs can already be seen. The outdoor mall has also featured wall-style artwork by several local artists in recent years, as well as live painting events that give shoppers the chance to see artists at work. ASU Art Galleries Gallery 100 has been relocated to Mirabella on ASU, located on University Drive and Mill Avenue in Tempe. It is one of several ASU galleries and showrooms that are open to the public. Others are the Harry Wood Gallery in the School of Art building on the Tempe campus, and the Step Gallery and Northlight Gallery in Grant Street Studios. Piper Trust Grants The Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust recently awarded grants to 71 nonprofits in a variety of key sectors, including the arts and culture. 22 arts and cultural organizations received a total of just over 32 million US dollars in unrestricted funding. Ten of these groups received grants of at least $ 1 million. Landmark Theaters Landmark Theaters will open an eight-screen cinema this fall in the Scottsdale Quarter, in the former IPIC Theaters room at 15257 North Scottsdale Road, # 230. The theater chain specializes in mainstream films and independent cinema. The exact opening date has not been announced.
