At the COP26 conference in Glasgow, a group of celebrities called on world leaders to adopt the Plant Based Treaty in order to avert a climate catastrophe. The Beatles singer-songwriter Paul McCartney and his daughters Mary and Stella, the actors Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara and Mahatma Gandhi’s granddaughter Ela Gandhi have called for animal husbandry and deforestation to be stopped and for a plant-based food system to be switched to. Together with vegan artist Moby, actors Peter Egan and Jerome Flynn, and academics and executives, they are encouraging the international community to switch to a plant-based diet. ”Animal husbandry is a major polluter, but leaders have largely ignored it. It is time to go tough with livestock to reverse the devastating pollution it has on our planet. We call on (UN) Secretary General (Antonio) Guterres to remove dirty animal husbandry from our food systems, ”Fleur Dawes, communications director for In Defense of Animals, a partner in the Plant Based Treaty, told New Musical Express (NME). Grassroot activists have launched an official plant-based campaign parallel to the UN climate conference. The campaign puts food systems at the forefront of tackling the climate crisis. Modeled after the fossil fuel non-proliferation treaty, the initiative aims to stop the destruction of critical ecosystems by promoting healthier, sustainable plant-based diets through subsidies and public information campaigns. Activists have urged scientists, individuals, groups and corporations to put pressure on governments to negotiate an international plant-based agreement three main greenhouse gases, fuels gases – now we need COP26 delegates and other leaders who recognize this, ”Anita Krajnc, global campaign coordinator for the Plant Based Treaty, told NME. The campaign calls for individuals to refrain from building new animal farms and slaughterhouses or to expand existing animal farms; stop clearing forests or other ecosystems for grazing animals; protect indigenous peoples; and ban live exports. To do this, governments should declare a climate emergency and make food security a priority to eradicate poverty. The campaign also aims to prioritize a switch to plant-based foods in climate protection plans. Governments should also undertake reforestation projects in appropriate ecosystems to restore habitats. What the Celebrities SayElectronic artist Moby posted a video message earlier this month saying, “We are facing a climate catastrophe, and a methane emergency in particular. We need to reach a global agreement to move to a plant-based food system at COP26 this year. ”The McCartneys, who launched the Meat Free Monday campaign in 2009, said,“ We believe in justice for animals, the environment and people.
