A Phoenix police officer is due to be released in connection with the fatal shooting of Ryan Whitaker last summer. Less than three seconds after opening the door of his apartment last May, Whitaker was shot twice in the back while attempting to cooperate with police officers and dropping a gun he was holding on the floor. The Use of Force Board reviewed the shooting and determined that the incident was within guidelines. However, after examining all the circumstances, Chief Jeri Williams decided that Officer Jeff Cooke’s appointment within the department should be terminated. Cooke is now on administrative leave. Cooke fired the shot that killed Whitaker, but prosecutors said earlier this year he would not face any criminal charges. Read it over at ABC15
