PHOENIX – The annual meeting of the International Association for Food Protection (IAFP) opened here on Sunday with the traditional Ivan Parkin Lecture. But IAFP 2021 is reminded that it returned to the world stage with its biggest event after missing a year because of the pandemic. Officially, it is a hybrid, with a personal conference in the Phoenix Convention Center and virtually online for everyone in the world. When IAFP Executive Director David Tharp and his board of directors decided to host a full-blown conference last winter, it sparked a bit of controversy among some who feared the pandemic would have more clout than the vaccines that were released. But with confidence, IAFP began selling conference and apartment registrations in February. And on Sunday, the IAFP 2021 was on track with a full-blown program live from Phoenix. And from Dr. Robert B. “Bob ‘Gravani, Professor Emeritus of Food Safety at Cornell University, attendees at the opening of IAFP 2021 received a positive message that focused on the people. Of factors that companies need to consider, Gravina said, “The staff is often the one who may not get a lot of attention than the others.” “Employees who perform their tasks regularly, routinely, competently, knowledgeably and knowledgeably – each time make up the culture of a leading company,” said Professor Gravani in prepared comments. In their welcome message, the IAFP Executive Board spoke about the role of food safety in a “connected world”. (To sign up for a free subscription to Food Safety News, click here.)
