The Belfast Mela, Northern Ireland’s largest cultural diversity festival, gave a taste of the upcoming week-long series of events with a mini-mela at Phoenix Natural Gas. The Mini Mela brought a taste of global culture and saw colleagues from Phoenix Natural Gas sample a taste of Nepal with some Himalayan spice from The Good Food Shak before delving into Bollywood dancing, African drumming and traditional henna Works of art. The Mini Mela also provided an exclusive preview of Belfast Mela’s weeklong cultural festival, which will host over 40 world music, dance, theater and arts events across the city from Monday 23 August to Sunday 29 August. Recognizing the importance of diversity and inclusion, the Mini Mela marked the culmination of a week-long focus on diversity at Phoenix Natural Gas, during which the company partnered with partners such as Cara Friend, AWARE NI, BITC NI, and the RNID to train its team about the challenges different groups of people face and the small steps they can take to be even more inclusive. Jonathan Martindale, Director of Business Development at Phoenix Natural Gas said, “As a responsible company and inclusive employer, it is important that we lead the way in understanding and recognizing the diversity of perspectives and experiences as we serve the societies and communities we serve , reflect. “The Belfast Mela is a vibrant celebration of global culture and diversity and we are excited that as a Friend of Mela we can bring some of that magic from Mela to Phoenix Natural Gas as part of our Diversity Week.” Nisha Tandon, OBE, Founder of Belfast Mela and Director of ArtsEkta, said: “The Belfast Mela Festival reflects the vibrant, enriched, cross-cultural and ambitious city that Belfast is growing to be and we are excited to bring a taste of our global connections to Phoenix as part of their Natural Gas Diversity Week. This year we’ve expanded Belfast’s Mela Festival to a full week to give everyone across the city the chance to attend and celebrate the magic of Mela in a safe and enjoyable way. While we know that many will miss our traditional festival in the Botanical Gardens, we are sure that there is something that appeals to everyone on the program and would encourage as many people as possible to come along and take part. ”All the details on this year’s Belfast Mela- Programs are now available at www.belfastmela.org.uk.
