^ I Support Local Community Journalism Support the independent voice of Phoenix and help keep the future of the New Times clear. A side product of 2020: Lately, a lot more conversations have included the phrase “I saw this TikTok the other day …” However, the app offers more than just practiced dancing and weird swearwords. Much of the content is related to food, and some of them were created right here in Arizona. Here are four local, food-related TikTok accounts to follow. @southwestsamplerAndrea Blake is the Southwest Sampler. While Blake’s account isn’t just devoted to food, it makes up a large part of its content. She often shares restaurant warnings when she visits local restaurants (like IL Bosco in Scottsdale) and quickly summarizes which menu items she tried. She also highlighted a recipe or two, like a current one for homemade bread. Aside from her food content, Blake’s account offers date ideas, skin care tips, and exercise routines – all of which can be food-related if you think about it. EXPAND Federal Pizza was featured on the Hungry Hotline. Allison Young @hungryhotline Next up is the Hungry Hotline. On this Phoenix-based report, Becca and her fiancé Justin take viewers to grocery stores, restaurants, bakeries, and many places in between in the Valley (think Worth Takeaway, Federal Pizza, and Famous 48). Most of the videos offer a brief introduction to the eatery, followed by a recap of their own culinary experiences – what they enjoyed or not enjoyed during their mealtime. This is ideal if you are constantly looking for new places to eat on Metro Phoenix. EXPAND Phoenix Coqui in the Melrose District was hot spot # 14. Phoenix Coqui @hotspotguyazMax Ortega – also known as the Hot Spot Guy – drives through Arizona looking for his next hot spot. This is often either a taco stop (like Taqueria Obregon), a food truck (like Phoenix Coqui), or some other southwestern restaurant. HSG’s videos are accompanied by upbeat Latin music or pop, and the restaurants and taco trucks he visits often reflect the same energy. This is a great episode if you’re looking for the holes in the wall in town that serve authentic food. EXPAND Panther Eats recently praised Katsu’s kimchi noodles. Jackie Mercandetti Photo @panthereats Perhaps the most comprehensive TikTok account for restaurant reviews in Arizona is Panther Eats. This divides its reviews into New Spot Alerts, Hidden Gems, and Takeout Reviews (check out the latest from Katsu on the Asiana Market). Videos are typically less than 30 seconds long, with quick restaurant highlights that are, um, easy to digest. Panther Eats also offers the occasional recipes and has prepared everything from Asian fusion steak to nachos to whipped coffee.
