For the first time since losing Arizona in the 2020 general election and his supporters attacked the U.S. Capitol, former President Donald Trump is returning to headline a rally in Phoenix. Turning Point Action, a pro-Trump nonprofit political advocacy group, announced today it will host the former president at the Arizona Federal Theater in downtown Phoenix. A Trump spokesman confirmed his planned attendance at the rally, according to the Arizona Republic. Trump made frequent visits to Arizona before the 2020 election. But he eventually lost the state with around 10,000 votes to Democratic President Joe Biden. Since then, he has continued to spread lies that his election was stolen and his allies in the local Republican Party have taken up his conspiratorial cause. Trump also reportedly tried to call a member of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors after the election as part of a campaign to pressure local officials to overturn Biden’s win in the county. Recently, Trump has instigated the Arizona election exam, which is dragging on. The Phoenix rally, titled “Rally to Protect Our Elections,” is believed to be fueling continued efforts by Arizona Republicans to re-litigate and de-legitimize the 2020 elections. (Trump has started to appear more publicly, including a recent rally in Ohio.) Republicans and Democrats in the state are preparing for a grueling mid-term election cycle in Arizona in 2022. Democratic Senator Mark Kelly stands for re-election and a number of other national officials, including the governor, stand for election. And with Trump still holding the Republican Party base like a vice, his continued presence in Arizona politics could have a significant impact on the prospects of the many Republican candidates battling for power. Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich, who runs for the US Senate, has already been criticized by Trump for failing to do enough to support the ongoing election test. In a tweet to announce the rally, Kirk said Trump would be coming to Phoenix for his “first post” at a presidential rally in America’s premier swing state defines it as the free, independent voice of Phoenix, and we want it to stay that way.
