PHOENIX – The aftermath of a rainstorm paralyzed a section of the freeway in both directions east of Phoenix early Wednesday. Floods closed US 60 between Superior and Miami, the Arizona Department of Transportation said. According to ADOT, the rain on Tuesday left standing water, stones and debris on the pavement. There was no estimated time for it to reopen, but the traffic authority said they expected a longer closure. A detour to State 77 and SR 177 via Winkleman is approximately 70 miles and includes a 10 percent incline that will more than likely increase travel time, the agency said. CLOSED: US 60 is closed in both directions between Superior and Miami (mile posts 226 and 243). The closure is due to standing water and storms on the roadway. #aztraffic #azwx pic.twitter.com/xWR5UyjzCB – Arizona DOT (@ArizonaDOT) August 11, 2021 ADOT crews scheduled 24-hour operations to repair the lane at the Bloody Tanks Wash near the Miami lockdown. About 300 truckloads of boulders are used to prop up the highway. The National Weather Service predicts a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms for Wednesday evening in Superior and a 40 percent chance for Thursday.
