Rudri Bhatt Patel It’s great that Phoenix has so many events going on, but sometimes we run out of money before we run out of days of the week. If you’re facing the same problem, here are some free events to keep you entertained. click to enlarge Network at Blue Hound Kitchen & Cocktails this week. Kimpton Hotel Palomar Phoenix Mixed Media Happy Hour If you’ve been “there” when it comes to happy hours, try one of Artlink’s Mixed Media Happy Hours. This is one of many ways the nonprofit brings together artists, businesses, and community members. The next one will take place on Wednesday, July 28th, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Blue Hound Kitchen & Cocktails at the Kimpton Hotel Palomar, 2 East Jefferson Street. The free event, which will have an unhosted bar, is an opportunity to meet and chat with local artists and other art lovers. The evening also kicks off the hotel’s first artist residency with a focus on fashion, where you can also see work by local designers. The organizers ask people to register online before participating. Whether or not you choose to act like a fashion plate is up to you. Lynn Trimble Salsa Class If you’ve always thought salsa dancing was fun but you haven’t the slightest clue how to do it, you can learn the steps in a free salsa class on Thursdays from 7pm to 8pm. July 29th, La Perla Sports Cantina, 5723 West Glendale Avenue, Glendale. You don’t need to bring a partner – although you are welcome to – just your dancing shoes and a sense of adventure. After the class you can stay at the bar and dance any way you like to the tunes spun by DJ Tony. Jennifer Goldberg click to enlarge In memory of a previous exhibition at the Bentley Gallery. Bentley Gallery Summer Art Vibes Perhaps you’re used to seeing art amid the hustle and bustle of First Friday, or opening receptions that draw dozens of people at once. Popping in to local art galleries during the week, when there are no formal events taking place but the art is still on view, is a great way to really spend time with artwork without dealing with other art nerds for a change. You can see this year’s Annual Summer Exhibition at Bentley Gallery, 215 East Grant Street, Thursday, July 29th, between 10:00 am and 5:30 pm. Expect works by more than three dozen artists, including many who create with the unexpected materials like glitter, hook and eye fasteners, lava, mylar, and accumulated smoke. Entry to the gallery is free and the exhibition lasts until August 13th. Lynn Trimble Shazam! Screening If you liked Big, the Tom Hanks classic about a teenager who makes a wish and wakes up as an adult, chances are you’re going to be Shazam! Love, the 2019 family movie about a teenage foster child who transforms into a grown-up superhero when he says (you guessed it), “SHAZAM!” Zachary Levi (who will appear as Kurt Warner in the biopic American Underdog later that year) plays the superhero who takes time out to explore his new powers to battle the forces of evil. Watch a Free Shazam Demonstration! at 2 p.m. Friday, July 30, Scottsdale Civic Center Library, 3839 North Drinkwater Boulevard, Scottsdale. Summer Sweat Series Now that the monsoons have brought somewhat cooler temperatures, the mornings are actually quite pleasant. So, if you’re a morning person, you might want to head to the Scottsdale Quarter, 15059 North Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale and start your day with a free outdoor workout class. On Saturday, July 31st, instructors from floo-id YOGA will lead the course and on Sunday, August 1st, you can take a course from the people of barre3. Both classes start at 8am and both include juice and discounts from vendors in the Scottsdale Quarter afterward if you want to stick around for shopping. Jennifer Goldberg
