Son takes over Christmas tree lot in south Phoenix after father dies of Brian Webb’s reports of COVID-19 FOX 10. PHOENIX – A popular South Phoenix Christmas tree park is open, but the man who started it all is missing this year. Jimmie Munoz Sr. died this year after contracting COVID-19. He started the Christmas Tree Farm, which is right in the front yard of the Munoz house on Central Avenue. Munoz started the Christmas tree shop in the 1980s after he and his family had to travel to Tempe to find a tree. The journey was a little too far so he decided to start his own tree park for the people of South Phoenix. It has grown since then and is still going strong after 35 years. “So my father was concerned that the people in South Phoenix, mostly African American and Hispanic, would have no place to find a Christmas tree,” his son said. That summer, Munoz died of kidney failure after contracting COVID-19. Before his death, he made sure this year’s harvest was coming from his hospital bed and called to ensure on-time delivery. Jimmie’s children came in to keep the tradition alive. “He loved every minute,” said his son Jimmie Munoz Jr. “Set the bar, have a beer and talk to people. That’s what I really miss most, having him here … he holds everyone together up to us, but it’s a nice burden to carry. “The Christmas Tree Farm is open daily from 10 am to 10 pm. Santa Claus will be visiting on December 15th. Visiting the property has become a tradition for many families in South Phoenix. “Coming here with so many supporters who have given the best of the community and of course the Christmas trees are the best said John Laredo, a customer.
