The weekend hasn’t started yet, but it will be over before you know it so you better start with plans to get the most of it. This time around, you can choose from a dance performance, a walking tour of downtown Tempe, the Rebel Lounge open mic night, and much more. Dance Refresh It has been more than a year since most Phoenix dance companies hit their stages, which means the excitement is building at the Phoenix Center for the Arts, 1202 North Third Street. This is where MAC & Company, founded in 2014 by Micaela Church and Li Pei Khoo to share the joys of dance performance and promote dance education, returns from its pandemic break. The dance company presents new works and newly interpreted pieces from its existing repertoire and lets the audience relive the thrill of live dance. The production, entitled NEW, will take place on Friday, August 27th at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $ 10. Benjamin Leatherman IZW Grand Prix / Nothing to Lose Long before aspiring professional wrestlers can compete in WWE or AEW (aka the big leagues), they typically spend years honing their craft in regional indie promotions. Here in the Valley, Impact Zone Wrestling is also part of it, the longstanding local feeding in which grabs from all over Arizona and the southwest fight in a square circle. At the IZW Grand Prix on Saturday, August 28th, at Sun Studios, Arizona, 1425 West 14th Street, Tempe, six tag teams will compete for supremacy, bragging rights and a trophy. Participating teams include The Tribe (Navajo Warrior and Hawaiian Lion), Cookies N Cream, and the Brothers of Wrestling. Elsewhere on the map, Gabriel Gallo will fight Graves and a four-way match will play against Mr. Classic, Bryce Saturn, Da Shade and Miracle Mike James. Doors open at 7 p.m. and tickets are $ 20. If you want even more action, the current wrestlers in training from the IZW will take part in the school show “Nothing to Lose” at the venue early in the day. It starts at 2:30 p.m. and entry is $ 10. The organization will present a pop-up marketplace called FABRIC Fest on Saturday, August 28th, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will take place in FABRIC’s Studio and Maker Space, 132 East Sixth Street, and will come from both the organization and a group called Friends of. benefit Phoenix public art. The free event will feature fashion from Laura Tanzer, Leeetie Lovendale and several other Arizona designers. It’s a great way to freshen up your closet while supporting the local art and fashion scene. The Rebel Lounge’s Facebook Rebel Lounge Open Mic How often have you seen a show in the Rebel Lounge and wished you were on stage? Well, here is your chance to take the mic. On Sunday, August 29th, the music hall is hosting an open mic night for all would-be rock stars. The event will be moderated by Micheal Coughlin and registration will start at 7:00 p.m. Entry is free, but you must be at least 21 years old. Break a leg! Jennifer Goldberg The GasLight Circus’ Speakeasy Live The circus will be in town this weekend, only it’s not the Barnum & Bailey variety. The aerialists, jugglers, clowns and other members of GasLight Circus – the local troupe that incorporates elements of fire art, sideshow culture, comedy and musical theater into their performances – will bring their speakeasy live showcase to Endgame, 1233 South Alma School, on Road in Mesa on Sunday, August 29th. It’s their first appearance since the troupe took a pandemic hiatus 18 months ago, and it introduces the antics of Connor the Clown, Lyra the Mermaid, Jero the Jester, and other characters. The troop’s ringmaster, known only as The Proprietor, will host the event, which will run from 7pm to 9pm. Participation is free. Benjamin Leatherman Find Balance You may have heard cues about the chakra system during a yoga class or other gathering aimed at balancing your life. If you’re not familiar with the system but would like to learn more, try a beginner’s course called Practical Intro to Chakras, presented by Fantasia Crystals, a new age shop that helps people explore a variety of worldviews and spiritual practices. It is taught by Neil Rasmussen in the store’s external classroom at 10850 North 32nd Street. The course costs $ 15 and there is a cash payment policy for the course. Participants will be introduced to the seven chakras believed to hold the body’s energy and will discuss ways to keep the chakras in balance.
