PHOENIX (AP) – Dozens of Metro Phoenix firefighters battled a large fire that involved several recycling yards and commercial buildings that sent black smoke across much of the city on Saturday. Fire Capt. Todd Keller, a spokesman for the Phoenix Fire Department, said the fire affected five commercial buildings and several recycling yards, including at least one tire store. “We’ll be out here all night,” answered Keller when asked how long it would take to put the fire out. There were no immediate reports of injuries or information about what started the fire, Keller said. The dozens of fire brigades dispatched to the fire included carts that used elevated water cannons to shoot water at the fire. At least 40 fire engines and 12 carts as well as numerous emergency services and special vehicles were in use on the fire brigade’s website. The answer included units from at least three other cities, Keller said. A firefighter was hospitalized in stable condition with a lower limb injury, Keller told the Arizona Republic. By Saturday night, Phoenix firefighters said the crews would gain control of the fire and work overnight to put out the remaining hotspots. Alicia Sylvester, 20, a Phoenix resident and a student at Arizona State University, told the republic that she stopped at the fire site for about 20 minutes after seeing how close the fire was to her place of work. “We were all worried, so we went aside and asked people, ‘Oh, what’s going on?'” She said.
