How Mask Mandate Removal Will Affect Downtown Schools (Hailey Rein / Downtown Devil) During the 2021-2022 school year, it is important to understand COVID-19 prevention policies from schools across the valley. According to the Center for Disease Control, facilities that do not take preventive measures are likely to experience significantly high transmission rates of COVID-19. It is therefore important to understand how schools implement measures to protect their employees and students from COVID-19. Here is an overview of the COVID-19 prevention guidelines for some schools in downtown Phoenix: Arizona State University Mask Policy: All individuals, regardless of vaccination status, must wear masks in all classrooms, meeting rooms, workshops, and design or production studios, as well as all clinical ASU programs and centers that serve the community. Masks are highly recommended in all campus buildings. Test Protocol: If a person, regardless of vaccination status, tests positive for COVID-19 and lives on campus, they will be assigned a 14-day isolation room. You will be provided with food and medical supplies if necessary. Phoenix Union High School District Mask Policy: All individuals, regardless of vaccination status, must wear masks in all campus buildings in the presence of others. Testing Protocol: If a person who is not vaccinated tests positive for COVID-19 or has been in close contact with someone who tests positive for COVID-19, they must undergo a mandatory 10-day quarantine. If the person tests negative and doesn’t have any COVID-related symptoms, they can go back to school after seven days. If a person who is fully vaccinated tests positive for COVID-19 or has been in close contact with someone who tests positive for COVID-19, they do not need to be quarantined unless they are instructed to be COVID-related Symptoms on. Arizona School for the Arts Mask Policy: All individuals, regardless of vaccination status, must wear masks in all campus buildings. Parents and staff can submit a form to exclude their children or themselves from the mask policy. Test Protocol: The school will conduct regular, pooled tests to identify positive COVID-19 cases. Arizona State University Preparatory Academy’s Mask Policy: All individuals, regardless of vaccination status, must wear masks when physical distancing is not possible. Test Protocol: Any person, regardless of vaccination status, who tests positive for COVID-19, as well as any close contacts that person has, are not allowed to return to school unless they have tested negative for the virus with no symptoms or they undergo a 10- day quarantine. All fully vaccinated individuals are advised to wear masks indoors. Test Protocol: If a person tests positive for COVID-19 regardless of vaccination status, they are not allowed to enter school for at least 10 days. They must also have been symptom-free for at least 24 hours. If a student arrives at school with COVID-like symptoms, they will be sent home and not have any COVID-like symptoms for at least 24 hours before they can return to school. Bioscience High School Mask Policy: All persons, regardless of vaccination status, must wear masks in all campus buildings in the presence of others. Testing Protocol: If a person who is not vaccinated tests positive for COVID-19 or has been in close contact with someone who tests positive for COVID-19, they must undergo a mandatory 10-day quarantine. If the person tests negative and doesn’t have any COVID-related symptoms, they can go back to school after seven days. Brophy College Preparatory Mask Guidelines: Starting September 10, all individuals, regardless of vaccination status, must wear masks in all campus buildings. From September 13th, masks are optional for everyone inside and outside, regardless of their vaccination status. Test Protocol: Any student or faculty member who is not fully vaccinated must undergo a COVID-19 test twice a week. Fully vaccinated students or faculty members who are vaccinated do not need to take scheduled tests. If one tests positive, regardless of vaccination status, they will be subject to a mandatory 10-day quarantine. Close contacts who are not vaccinated are also required to receive a COVID-19 test and quarantine. George Washington Carver High School George Washington Carver High School is currently in a distance learning model. St. Mary’s Catholic High School Mask Policy: All individuals, regardless of vaccination status, must wear masks on campus except when alone in a room or office. Test Protocol: Any person, regardless of vaccination status, who has tested positive for COVID-19 or has been in close contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19 must notify St. Mary’s Front Office immediately. Summit High School Mask Policy: All individuals, regardless of vaccination status, are strongly advised, but not required, to wear masks while on campus during school time. Test Protocol: If a person has symptoms similar to COVID, regardless of vaccination status, they should not be attending school. If they show symptoms at school, they must be picked up immediately by a parent or guardian. If a person, regardless of vaccination status, tests positive for COVID-19 or has been in close contact with someone who tested positive, they must contact the school for quarantine / isolation guidelines. Test protocol: The temperature of students and staff is measured before they enter a school building. If someone has a temperature greater than 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit, they will be placed in a mandatory 72-hour quarantine. If someone tests positive for COVID-19, they must undergo a mandatory 14-day quarantine. Anyone showing symptoms of COVID-19 should be quarantined for 72 hours.
