Beth Phoenix is a WWE Hall of Famer who was one of the early pioneers of the women’s revolution. In 2019, the company hired her as a full-time commentator for NXT. It remains an integral part of the show, even after the recent development to NXT 2.0.
While she’s a veteran in the ring, Phoenix admitted that she needed a lot of help changing the comment. She spoke to Ryan Satin on Out of Character about the people she was supporting. She also talked about how comments have changed the way she watches wrestling.
“Tom Phillips gave me a lot of encouragement and education. Mauro (Ranallo) and Nigel (McGuinness) who were my partners and support system for a long time when I literally had no idea what I was doing. Michael Cole has been my champion for so long, believed in me, given me this opportunity, stayed by my side, even when I sucked from top to bottom and encouraged myself. Vic Joseph and Wade Barrett, I told them I love my job, but I enjoyed them. I am having so much fun. Our production and producers, all of them are great. Wade and Vic, I feel like our chemistry as a team is perfect. We’re the right team for NXT and I love picking on Wade Barrett, it’s one of my favorite things to do.
[…] “I always knew that commentators were a big part of the show, but as wrestlers all we had to worry about was your segment, your match, your promo. As commentators, it is our job to overtake everyone and bring out strengths, hide weaknesses and connect the dots when something goes wrong or doesn’t go as planned. We have to cover injuries.
A commentator has many responsibilities, but most of all we are the voice of the audience. We go to great lengths to represent what the audience wants to see and what the audience feels. We try to connect with them and resonate with them to speak out loud what they think. There is a lot about the job that I didn’t understand at the beginning and right now I’m just beginning to crack the surface of my role as one of the voices in NXT. “
After joining the NXT comment team, Phoenix received a lot of terrible feedback. Since then she has felt more comfortable in the role. With the help of several long-time veterans, she seems to have settled in.
