Bertha Louise Scott Gorraiz Phoenix – Bertha Louise Scott Gorraiz died on Monday July 12th 2021 from this earth to be with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was comforted and surrounded by her family at home in Phoenix, Arizona, and has died peacefully. She leaves behind her 66-year-old husband Pete Gorraiz, 6 children, Pete, Joe, Pat, Amalia Ann, Rhonda Gay and Kathy (Neville); 12 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren plus a brother, Ron Scott and sister, Juanice Scott. She leaves behind countless family members and close friends, all of whom were very special to her. Born in Littlefield, Texas, she moved to Phoenix, Arizona, when she was 4 years old in 1938 and never moved out of the state. She attended Creighton Elementary Grade School, North Phoenix High School, and Grand Canyon College, where she graduated with a degree in Education. During the entire 16 years she did not miss a single day of visiting. She met Pete at the Grand Canyon and they were married in 1954 at the Eastside Baptist Church. Eastside was her only church membership where she was a life teacher, playing the piano, and singing in the choir. She was the only thrower for the Eastside women’s fast-pitch softball team and later became a teaching trainer in softball camps. She was instrumental in spearheading an Eastside food drive for the hungry at St. Mary’s Food Bank. She led a very full life during her 87 years. She taught first grade at Simpson Elementary School and ran a preschool class where she created her own curriculum. After several years as a teacher, she decided to become a housewife. She was sincerely committed to her children and donated her time wherever it was needed. Over the years she has competed in a bowling league, enjoyed traveling, and donated over 15 gallons of blood. She enjoyed a variety of jobs including 17 years at the Mackinac Island Fudge Booth at the Arizona State Fair and nearly 2 decades at the Mervyn’s Department Store. She continued to be involved in the community and in the Church. She was athletic, a fierce competitor, and a committed student. During her visit to the Grand Canyon, she was instrumental in permanently changing the school colors to the current purple and white. For the past 10 years, she and Pete have been heavily involved in Grand Canyon University alumni activities and served in the GCU guild. She is missed on the sidelines at her home basketball games. She was an avid supporter of the Phoenix Suns and the Arizona Diamondbacks. She loved watching Professional Tennis & College Softball, and enjoyed family games, crossword puzzles, and of course, Coca-Cola.
