PHOENIX – State officials have signed a contract with a development team to build additional lanes and other improvements along a 23-mile stretch of Interstate 17 that is often congested with traffic, especially on weekends and holidays. The Kiewit-Fann joint venture’s development team is slated to begin construction of the nearly $ 446 million project between Anthem and Sunset Point north of Phoenix in 2022, with work expected to take about three years, the Arizona Department of Transportation said Thursday . The project includes a 15 miles widening of the interstate between Anthem and Black Canyon City and 8 miles of new flex lanes from Black Canyon City to Sunset Point, ADOT said. The Flex Lanes will be able to move traffic in both directions and are designed to help reduce congestion during rush hour and facilitate traffic in emergencies, ADOT said. The state agency announced that the Kiewit-Fann joint venture, which includes construction and engineering firms, was selected over two other finalists. According to ADOT, most of the road closures for the project will be scheduled in the evening and early morning during the week, although the construction zones will be active seven days a week. The total cost of the project is $ 445,940,000, including the developer’s construction costs and ADOT’s costs to manage the project, the transportation agency said.
