Empty Bowls: Fundraiser in Phoenix to Benefit Hungry People Ty Brennan of FOX 10 visits a pottery studio busy making bowls for empty bowls, a fundraiser that helps feed the hungry. PHOENIX – Arizona Nonprofit Waste Not takes good food that would otherwise be thrown away and distributes it to organizations that support those in need. Now they are preparing for their annual fundraiser and need the help of the public. In a few weeks, a collection of hand-thrown bowls will be part of the charity’s “Empty Bowls” fundraising campaign. “Waste Not saves perishable food from here in the Valley,” said a spokesman. “We pick up groceries from grocery stores, catering companies, restaurants and pick them up the same day in our refrigerated trucks and deliver them to 85 non-profit partners who then feed people in need.” Over the past few months, Laurie Canfield of the Sunshine Sunflower Studio – along with other Arizona Clay Association artists – have been making hundreds of bowls for the fundraiser. “It’s so meaningful,” Canfield said. “It makes you feel like you are serving your purpose. You have a gift, and being able to use that gift to help others is most important.” On October 15, folks at the Arizona Center in downtown Phoenix have the option to purchase a $ 20 bowl that includes a salad and go lunch. An additional bowl can be purchased for $ 10. All the money raised goes directly back to Waste Not. “Five meals are provided for every dollar donated, so the food we receive is free, donated by companies, and companies can donate for free,” the spokesman said. “It’s a really nice solution to food waste for them instead of throwing it away.” Learn more: https://www.wastenotaz.org/emptybowls More headlines from Arizona Tune in to FOX 10 Phoenix for the latest news:
