PHOENIX – Low-cost airline Allegiant Air has added two more routes to Metro Phoenix starting next year, with connections to and from cities in Tennessee and Ohio. Nonstop flights between Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport and Knoxville, Tennessee, will depart twice a week starting February 16; Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport will fly to Toledo, Ohio twice a week on March 9, the airline announced on Tuesday. “These routes will connect our customers to key Arizona destinations … just in time for the spring break,” Allegiant managing director Drew Wells said in a press release. The Las Vegas-based airline has been offering non-stop service from Valley to a variety of regions including Orange County, California, since August; Minneapolis; Pittsburgh; Spokane, Washington; and Tulsa, Oklahoma. Allegiant plans further expansion – with a view to Mexico. The company and Viva Aerobus recently announced that they will seek antitrust immunity from the U.S. and Mexican governments to form an alliance that will include collaboration in setting timetables and routes across the border. Allegiant said it will invest $ 50 million in the deal in the Mexican airline, which it claims was the first of its kind to include two ultra-low-cost airlines. The airlines said they would begin operating under the alliance in the first quarter of 2023, pending approvals from the U.S. Department of Transportation and Mexico’s Federal Economic Competition Commission.
