PHOENIX (3TV / CBS 5) – A family business in Phoenix has to close its doors. The closure is not because the business is not doing well, but because the owner cannot find enough people to work for them. The doors here at the My Gal Sal Bakery and Café in Phoenix are officially closed for good. The owner had a tough choice. Cancel your lease at the end of the year or close your business. The owner Salomae Schroeder always intended to stay open, but had to close her doors because she couldn’t find enough workers. “Said Schroeder. Tears filled Schroeder’s eyes today as she served her last customers. “I will miss many of my customers who have become my friends,” said Schroeder. Schroeder made her dream come true. She came from overseas and opened a bakery in Phoenix. Schröder said she has been successful for five years. Their shop was voted the best bakery in the valley in 2018 and 2019, but an unforeseen situation arose after the outbreak of the pandemic. Raj says after eight years at her Tempe location, her landlord won’t renew her lease and she will have to move out in a few weeks. “Nobody wants to work; I don’t know where the people are, ”said Schroeder. Schroeder said 24 people recently applied for jobs. Sixteen of them did not answer their follow-up calls, and the others did not show up for the interviews. “I’m just mentally exhausted. I just can’t do it alone anymore, ”said Schroeder. Schroeder works more than 14 hours a day to keep her business going. Closing her doors was a decision beyond her control. “That was a terrible experience for me,” said Schroeder. Schroeder said she paid her workers above the minimum wage and gave year-end bonuses. She even said with these incentives; it wasn’t enough. And she is not alone. “I know that many companies have difficulties finding employees,” said Schroeder. “Nobody wants to work; I don’t know where the people are, ”said Schroeder. Today customers filled the bakery, ordered their favorite dishes for the last time, hugged Schröder and wished them all the best. “She created an amazing business; their food is wonderful, ”said Kimmel. “I’ll miss her.” Schröder said she didn’t know what the future held for her. She hopes the workforce will recover so that they can return to serving the people in the community. “I’ll always be so grateful for all the support I’ve had over the years,” Schroeder said they donate to a local board.
