The Phoenix Day School for the Deaf and a neighborhood next door are experiencing an abundance of feral cats. Many are looking for a remedy. PHOENIX – The Phoenix Day School for the Deaf has a problem with wild cats and the parents of the school are organizing something against it. A GoFundMe page attributed to Felicity Short describes the problem as “30-35 cats living in a colony in our neighborhood”. The GoFundMe is seeking help to raise funds to catch, neuter, and return the cats. “Most of these cats live on a school campus for the deaf and blind, which means that some areas are closed to the children due to the defecation caused by the cats,” the site says. The Orangewood neighborhood is just south of the school, which is on 19th Avenue between Northern Avenue and Morten Avenue. Neighbors said the cats are a problem for them too. “You are on my roof. You are standing on my terrace. They poo on my terrace, ”said a man who did not want to be identified. “The hood of my truck has scratches and cat prints on my wife’s car. At night I hear catfights and I come outside and there is cat fluff all over the place. The man pointed our camera at a broken angel statue. “You broke that statue too,” he said. James Ilif has lived in the neighborhood for 20 years and was a member of the homeowners association. He said he saw a woman feed the cats and he thinks that’s the problem. “Every day she leaves water for them and she leaves huge piles of food for them on the school grounds,” said Ilif. 12 News saw several bowls of food and water along the school fence line. Ilif said most of the help offered to the neighborhood has been free traps. He said it doesn’t help much. “We’re an older community anyway, and everyone on the board is retired and no one is going to take responsibility for locking up and taking in a cat,” Ilif said. The GoFundMe page has a target of $ 5,000 and had raised more than $ 4,200 by Thursday night. The postal administrator wrote on November 3rd that this would be enough to “neuter 17 cats and encourage multiple litters”.
