Modified Arts Reopens The Modified Arts creative space on Roosevelt Row reopened after a pandemic hiatus that they used as an opportunity to display window installations by several artists. The gallery is currently showing the “Homeland (In) Security” exhibition, which features works in a variety of media including drawing, printmaking, mixed media, and more. Participating artists are Gloria Martinez-Granados, Karen Nazario, Elizabeth Pineda and Yvette Serrano. The exhibition lasts until November 13th. Scottsdale Arts Canal Convergence Lineup Scottsdale Arts has announced the Art Lineup for its Canal Convergence 2021 event, November 5–14. Here are the works created by Phoenix-based artists: AeroGels by Roy Wasson Valle / Fireweather Studios, Floom by Walter Productions, and Time Stream by Casey Farina. Other works of art are The DOOR (S) by Paul Magnuson / Big Art, Entwined Meadow by Charles Gadeken, Light Falls by Vigas, Mini Nova by Abram Santa Cruz / Liquid PXL, Arc ZERO-Oculus by James Tapscott, The Planets by PITAYA, Mirage by Nancy Baker Cahill Studio and Say What You Will by MASARY Studios. Arizona Nominees President Joe Biden has announced who he will nominate to head the National Endowment for the Arts and National Endowment for the Humanities. If confirmed, Shelly Lowe will become the first Native American to serve as chair of the NEH, and Dr. Maria Rosario Jackson will become the first African American and Mexican American to serve as Chair of the NEA. Jimmy Fike Artist Book Release Phoenix-based photographer Jimmy Fike will be releasing a book in February 2022 showing photos of plants he took while traveling the country. The book is titled Edible Plants: A Photographic Survey of the Wild Edible Botanicals of North America. Originally from Alabama, Fike earned his MFA in Photography from the Cranbrook Academy of Art. He currently teaches art at Estrella Mountain Community College. The book is published by Red Lightning Books and is available for pre-order now. New Public Art Map The Department of Arts and Culture of the City of Phoenix has released a new map with more than 200 works of art in public spaces and information on where to find them. The resource comes as Ed Lebow, director of the public arts program, prepares for retirement. You can use the card for self-guided tours of urban artifacts found in a variety of settings such as freeway underpasses, municipal waterways, pedestrian bridges, street landscapes, and the airport. The map is available on the web and on your mobile device. Museum opens Gallery Phoenix Art Museum will reopen the Ullman Center for the Art of Philip C. Curtis in its original location on the first floor of the museum on October 23. Curtis was the founder of the Phoenix Federal Art Center, the first iteration of the museum. Opened in 2001, the gallery will show Curtis’ works that have been seen in other parts of the museum in recent years. Click to enlarge View an existing Jane Goat mural in Park Central Mall. Park Central Mural Finalists Four murals were selected as finalists following a public call for a mural project in the Park Central Mall. The mural will be painted on the west entrance of the mall on Third Avenue and Earll Drive and will feature a design that honors “the spirit and identity of Phoenix’s Hispanic heritage”. Youth Arts Engagement Scholarship recipients in the Phoenix area include the Keystone Montessori Charter School, Re: Frame Youth Arts Center, Ballet Arizona, Harmony Project, Gray Box Collective, Kids in Focus, U-Turn Foundation, and the GEM Charter School.
