Food Turns to Art: Downtown Phoenix Can-Stacking Art Contest PHOENIX – Can-Stacking contestants are taking their art to the next level at the 14th annual CANSTRUCTION Design Build Contest in downtown Phoenix this October. Stack, stack, stack. Unpack and repeat. Food becomes an art form within the walls of the Arizona Center. After an exhibition at the Science Center last month, teams of engineers, architects and marketing agencies are working to design structures out of cans for Phoenix Canstruction. “They love to make fun of each other. I think we have almost 20 different companies in 9 teams this year,” said Steven Still of Phoenix Canstruction. Can stack winners compete in international competitions, so take it seriously – or at least as much as you can when it comes to food can towers. “Air traffic control tower, plane coming out of the hangar … a zoo … there is a work boot next door and a couple of buildings with sun motifs,” said Still. Do you think it’s easy? Think again Still says it’s more complicated than it looks “Cans are never exactly the same height, they don’t necessarily stack well,” said Still. “The bigger you get, the less stable it becomes.” Anyone can come by in the next two weeks to see and vote for a winner. Maybe donate a few cans – after all, every can here is donated to St. Mary’s Food Bank. That’s 48,000 cans in total, a lot of food for the church after two tough years. “Of course, the holiday season has a lot of family needs and lots of attempts to get together and vacation for months,” Still said.
