It’s a popular “pop-up” seed bazaar that sells dozens of vegetables, herbs, beans, greens, grains, and flower seeds in bulk at a dramatic discount. Even during the pandemic, 20 million people joined the ranks of American gardeners. We spoke to Greg Peterson about the sowing event and the benefits of gardening. Urban agriculture has grown significantly since the pandemic. “We have never been as busy as we have been in the past year and a half,” said Peterson. He added that it is much less costly to the environment to grow food in a backyard. At the beginning, Peterson said the most important thing was to put the garden in the right place. “With placement, your garden will either be successful or not.” A south-facing garden in a garden will get sun all day. Peterson recommends not placing a garden on the north side of a backyard. “Soil is the most important thing you can build in order to grow food.” Healthy soil consists of five components: dirt, air space, organic matter, water and everything that lives in the soil. The Great American Seed up is a solution to the local seed shortage. The Seed-Up event features 80 different types of pollinated seeds. There are free online courses for people familiar with growing seeds.
